Default Very loud high pitched squeal from passenger wheel well.

Hi guys,

So, last week, I heard this high pitched squeal coming from the wheel well. At low speeds it seemed. It was in a parking garage.

But then, it disappeared. All of a sudden, I'm reversing into a spot barely touching the brake and it's squealing again.

I then take it again for a spin around the garage, no sound. I reverse again, no sound.

A few days later, I'm pulling out of the garage and the sound is so loud my GF could hear it from within another car behind me. It squeals until I start going faster and I'm on the highway. I get to my destination, ask my friend who is good with cars to check it out. But of course, i couldn't recreate the sound. Tried going slow, backing up, braking, going faster, etc.

So, do you know of a sound that would be very loud one day and completely go away the next?

I've been googling for days so that when I take the car to the dealership I can specifically tell them what may be the cause because with my luck I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen when they test drive it.

I saw some things about a shim or clip on the brake pad possibly touching the rotor or is loose? Anybody have any other experience or ideas?

I'll definitely mention to the techs that I think it's something to do with the rotor and pads so that they at least take a close look at it. I just hope they don't test drive it and decide it's fine and not even have a look.

I am not sure of the pads on our cars since I have yet to take a close look at them, but, MOST cars have a piece of metal that is riveted to one of the brake pads, so as the friction material wears down this metal will scrape the rotor making a god awful sound that practically sends shivers down your spine...

It is possible that is what is happening in your case... BUT it should happen all the time when you hit the brakes if your pads are worn out enough.. It is strange that it is going away or intermittent...

Perhaps something is loose with regards to the calipers??

How many miles on your car?

Yeah so they aren't nearly broken in yet...

I can only think of one other thing and this happened to me on a Ford rental car...

A tiny pebble got caught between the back of the rotor and the dust shield and it made the same kind of noise that a worn out pad would make.. Took me all of 5 mins to get it out...

Sounds like a piece of rock wedged btw break pad and rotor. I've had it happen to me twice on the IS.

could be the pads breaking in or could just be a small pebble caught between the brake rotor and the debris shield. Some times a little pebble will get kicked up and make spectacular noises
