Hi guys,

Here's a pic of the wear on my exhaust tips of my is 350fsport AWD.

Is this normal?

I only have 3900miles and it's been 4 months.

My friend's 250 has 5K miles and looks just like your pictures. She's a fastidious cleaner and this has still occurred.

The cars run on the 'rich side' (better than leaned out) and hence the carbon build up. My MazdaSpeed3 also is notorious for depositing 'soot' on the rear of the hatch and exhaust pipes. Use a non-scratch type Scotchbrite pad to clean. U need to stay on them regularly or it will be a pain to bring them back to full luster.

Here are mine. Granted I live in California and I keep the car in the garage. My car is almost 6 months old. They started to,get a little dirty at the bottom of the oval. I just used a metal (chrom) Polish and it cleaned right up!

Wow those look really shiny. Those are the stock enhausts? I don't remember mine being that shiny even the day I bought the car home

That isnt' wear, it's soot and spray build-up because you are not doing your job of cleaning it. Every car will have a similar look after several months of driving. Take the time to clean the tips with a wet rag everytime you clean the car, and you won't have this problem or this post. Standard cleaning maintenance. Everyone seems to omit cleaning the tips, then they become permanantly baked in black in two years and wonder where their new car look went.

That's a pretty confident response Fizzboy but in the case of my ex's 250, your conclusion is wrong. She washes at least weekly, if not more, and always cleans the exhaust tips. I agree on the source of the stain but it may take some polish to remove it in some cases.

Hi Ks13, these are the stock tips. I just use a wet rag on these tips when I wash the car every time and then once every couple of months I hit it with the chrome polish.

For months of not cleaning it, your tips look good! My 250 gets that dirty in just a a week of use!

Like everyone said, wipe them clean every time you wash your car with a separate rag. I also use just regular car polish on the tips (lately Meguair's Ultimate Polish) every once in a while to bring out the extra shine.

Another easy way I have seen to keep them clean is to use the same all wheel cleaner you would use on the wheels. It works the best when the car is cold when the exhaust pipes are cold. You'll want to make sure you only spray the pipes to make sure you are not getting any of the chemicals on your paint. Once the solution has been allowed to work, you just wipe off and rinse well. Then as others have said, a good coat of wax should help cleaning in the future.

That happens on petrol cars, its natural. Nothing to be worried about.

The trick in the industry is to use metal polish, I use Autosol metal polish with fine grade wire wool on my wife's car. It works wonders.

You can also use wheel cleaner with fine grade wire wool.

Top the exhaust up with FK1000P. Its extremely heat resistant and can be used on alloy wheels + bodywork too. Lasts about 6 months.

I use metal polish on the tips once a month to avoid this issue.

Thanks guys for the reply. Used the metal polishing wool and it restored the exhaust pipes to the original shine.

I use warm water and an old t shirt, works just fine
