Default Motor Trend Long Term Review IS Arrival

Noticed this on Motor Trend. Rather than the usual long term test of keeping the car for a year, they're going to test a standard IS250 for 4 months, then an AWD IS350 for 4 months, followed by an IS350 F Sport for 4 months.

One thing is for sure, the online reader comments after the article reveal a LOT of hate for this car and for Lexus. Wow.

People will always have something bad to say. The funny thing is, most people who talk bad about the Lexus IS haven't even been in one. I wasn't considering the IS...until I sat in one and fell in love. It was by far the best all around choice. I think German car lovers just hate to admit that consumers can now choose a car that can match in performance and has far more reliability.

Not only the Consumer reports and other reviewers put down the IS250 but a lot of people also care less about this car. I think Lexus is trying to milking the consumers with their decision not to update the powertrains and people are not stupid.
I don;t care about the comments about the look as the look is subjective ( and I personally love it) but I won't pay $20k in difference and trade in my car to get the same crappy old engine from 9 years ago.

250 days are numbered, 2.0 turbo will replace it for the better.

It seems like the common thread of negative comments is on the exterior styling. I for one like the newer styling of the Lexus lineup. It looks fresh and stands out from theother mundane looks out there.

In the early to mid 2000's Chris Bangle (Chief Designer for BMW at the time), developed the BMW styling that was called the "flame surface or design". It was totally different than what everyone liked and was very edgy. The style was widely criticized by the public, but in the end, the models with his styling became some of the highest selling in BMW history.

People are quick to criticize what they don't know or never experienced.

I find that the car really doesn't represent in photographs all that well. At least, it appears in person to be MUCH more attractive than in photos (I hated it the first time I saw it in photos, but loved it once I saw one in real life). I think the negative comments over the looks will reduce once it has some more time to grow on people and they get a chance to see it in real life.

As I own an IS350 AWD, I am most interested in seeing what they say about that version when they get it in a few months.

at least not in the media and press photos they don't. I think they look great in enthusiasts photos, stock or modified as they know what angles look good. But you are correct, the car looks even better in person! My favorite part of the exterior is the front bumper application. Like someone in the article comments said "predator!"
It looks imposing and menacing from the front.

0-60 - 7.2s for the 250. Not too shabby.

I did 7.5s for 0-62 dash

But I guess in America, you need to be sub 5s to be "fast enough"

I sold a Genesis that did 4.8 and all that got me was on to the freeway real fast where I'd then have to hit my brakes hard to avoid rear ending the car in front of me stuck in traffic. Then I'd look to the left and see a Porsche going as fast as the Camry to my right -- 10 miles and hour -- stop and go.

Actually 5 or under is the standard nowadays. I think that's the only reason the 335i m sport is staying afloat. I was considering that car until the countless articles I've read say its not as sharpe, agile or whatnot as the previous e90. Only thing it's got going for it is the power+looks. Plus I can't believe it's a 1k option for the adaptive suspension. More of a reason to go with the fsport (comes standard). F sport with my options was 43k ($300 above invoice). Same options on the 335i was around 51-52k totally redic!!!!

That's a cheap 335i, the one I saw that looked comparable was $58k. But with BMW you have to buy other options you may or may not want to get the ones you do want. You should have test drove the 335i ....and an E90 right after. The F30 is a complete let down outside of the cabin improvements.

Yeah knowing German engineering I opted to stay away from as much tech and electronics as possible--that's how dealers make their business. I spec'ed out a 335i m sport with red interior, remote start, adaptive suspension, and an alarm. Can't believe that crap was over 50k!!!

The 335i u may have seen could have been a fully loaded one if not a 335is. But for that much you're already in ISF territory so why not get that with more hp and guaranteed reliability?
