I've noticed that, with pedestrians, they have to be closer than another vehicle would before the system notices them. However, if at someplace like a grocery store, they're pushing a cart they will get picked up from further away.
I have, however, had a time or two where it has not picked up a pedestrian, so I never rely on it for this purpose.

yep, safety thing. Don't want people randomly opening your gas tank cover to siphon it out or pour sugar or something in there.
Which is why Ford's boggle my mind. They don't even have a screw cap now. Just a lid that doesn't lock and anybody can access the gas tank at any point.
