does everyone's wastegate actuator - 2l turbo I4
 

so my car, a 2018 is300 rwd f-sport, was totaled last week. i'm upset about it for obvious reasons and being thrust into purchasing another car when i don't want to at a time when interest rates are extremely high sucks.

i'm looking to buy the same model and wanted to know if anyone hasn't had the wastegate actuator fail with a higher mileage 2018-2019 IS with the turbocharged 2l I4. It failed on the car i just lost, but i'm wondering if i should just have it replaced at the time of purchase or if there is a possibility that this won't fail and just wait until it does.

Interest rates are not extremely high. They were previously extremely low but that doesn’t make today’s moderate rates extremely high.

the rate i was approved for is double the rate i had before. i've never had a rate above 4% in my entire life and the current average is higher than that for buyers with excellent credit. they're really quite high at present.

i didn't post to ask your opinion on what i'd consider to be very high interest rates, though. clearly.

Did some Google-Fu for you and found some interesting stuff. Wastegate failures have been a Toyota/Lex issue on various cars with both 6 and 4 cylinder engines, Tundra included which sells enough it got their attention to go into crisis mode. Good news is parts have been redesigned for both, and also being retrofitted into existing cars in for related warranty work. How well the redesign holds up is still unknown.

Im probably a lot older than you and my business has me follow interest rates, go look at a 50 year chart if you’re curious.

i'll look into interest rates over the past several decades. thanks for that, too. i'm sure it'll help me manage with having to take on a higher apr when i wasn't expecting it. haha.

The 2.0 NX200t sells in the greatest numbers compared to the IS here are some threads on it, also the system is or at least was delicate enough for the factory to list cooldown times for it which I imagine most owners didn’t even know existed.

The 2.0 turbo was a new engine a decade ago, so hopefully the redesigned parts are adequate as they’ve had plenty of time and examples to study. They did also apparently remove the cooldown instructions from the owners manual a couple years ago so maybe that’s a good sign. Maybe?

(Edit; don’t remember which page i got the image from but I think it was for a 2.0 not a 2.5 or 6cyl turbo. But not totally sure)

thanks! yeah, i had the 2l and i never let my car idle after driving; i'd just turn it off. i don't think (?) that's what's causing the waste gate actuators on these to fail, though. maybe.

Hot shutdown can cause carbon buildup, and carbon buildup at wastegate valve reduces the seal and as well is abrasive. Not sure why the Lexus wastegates fail, though.
