Post Lexus IS350 2nd Gen Transmission adventure

It appears to me gear slipping for the IS 2nd gen is an issue for few members here who have aging car like mine. So I'd like to create a new post to share and as well as gain more experience on this topic.

My 2007 IS350 with 170K miles is slipping and stuck in 3rd gear with 2 code indicating solenoid issue. Specifically for me is P0751 and P2714. I've never look at the transmission fluid, change it or drain it since I've owned it at 40K miles. I have envisioned the worst case scenario and accept the possibilities.

Thanks to many knowledgeable members, pioneering spirit, bravery and collective information provided here on the forum, I am more confident in tackling this transmission issue myself. Surely bringing the car to the expert is the easiest option. But learning things the hard way makes it more fun. Traumatic experiences typically generate responsive neurons

I'm currently in the process of fixing it. It's been so cold lately. I just couldn't get my *** to stay in the garage on cold day so this will be a slow updating post...

So far I have drained the fluid. Remove the transmission pan and the filter. I plan to Ohm out the solenoids and remove the one that's defective to see what's wrong with them.

1/2 liter from check bolt. 2 liter from drain bolt at room temp.

Fluid looks dark and smell burnt... That is not a good sign. Also, looks like I'm missing a magnet.

Gunk on magnets

Gunk!

Filter and lower valve body. Dripping fluid looks kind of red but collectively looks dark.

Old filter (left) & New filter (right)

Valve body with the filter removed and the oil wipe off so my face will not be filled with it while I attempt to ohm these solenoids.

I checked the resistance of all my solenoid while they were on the car and found out my SSA is defective. So I removed it and check it again to verify functionality.

SSA resistance is way over spec. and wouldn't move when 12v current is applied.

I also replaced my PCS-D just because the code indicated that as an issue even though it ohm out and works fine when I applied current to it.

SSA & PCS-D removed and replaced.

SSA & PCS-D solenoids location in valve body.

After I replaced those two solenoids, installed new filter and gasket. I pumped in enough Valvoline Max Life ATF fluid then took the car around the block and on the highway to see if the slipping and code would show up again. Luckily my PROBLEM IS SOLVED with just replacing these two solenoids! For now, I'll be continuing to drain and replace the fluid until it stop coming out black. Seems like this adventure stop short at the solenoid but I'm not complaining
Thanks to the members sharing the information on this forum, even if it was something as far as replacing the whole transmission, I would be confident enough to travel further.

In preparing for this challenge I went out and bought a used transmission to prepare for worst case scenario while I was waiting for the temp to warm up enough for me to work in the garage. The used transmission I bought have a torque converter and a set of solenoids in place. Unfortunately 2 solenoids were physically damaged due to dented up oil pan. The pan may have been damaged by either the accident or someone mishandle the transmission before I bought it. Fortunately the solenoid I needed to replace were not damaged so I was able to swap out the nonfunctional solenoid from my car with the ones from this transmission. Now I have a extra spare transmission and torque converter sitting in my garage. If anyone around Dallas/Fort Worth area is looking for a transmission PM me.

I'll post up more when on PC but open this. Its the tech papers on the A760E transmission. Lots of good info.

Link is here. If the link goes away simply search for A760E.PDF. This is from the Tundra/Tacoma truck but the same trans.

As for solenoids, If they ohm out, also apply 12vdc and confirm they click. If they click remove them and apply 12v again and then backflush them to confirm they switch and flow.

If they do flow, likely not the problem and you need to look elsewhere for hung valves in the valve body or the rubber check ***** that degrade at the separator plate....

Do a search for A760E valve body upgrade. You'll find plenty of kits out there.

you aren't missing a magnet. I have only 3 as well and my transmission was never opened prior.

FWIW - the fur on the magnet looks pretty normal for trans with this many miles. Believe me I've seen far worse that were still functional. Just not healthy.

You might just fix this with a valve body repair.
I'd suggest you cut open the filter and inspect it for kicks and grins.

Unfortunately, I threw the old filter away after I took the pictures so I wont have the pleasure of cutting it apart. From what I remember the filter were not filled with sludge or anything like that nature similar to the magnet when I stick my hand in to touch the filter media.

3 magnets is definitely what is supposed to be in there, and they don't look like they have any more than a normal amount of buildup on them.

Things look pretty good.
