2IS really faster than the 3IS?
Been watching YouTube races where IS350s walk all over some “faster” cars like Chrysler SRTs and 350Zs and the like. I even saw one where an IS350 hung with an ISF until around 50mph.
Thing is, all these were second generation. I can’t seem to find nearly as much footage of third generation IS350s putting down competitive performance, and it even seems like the third generation is consistently getting slower 0 to 60 times.
I’m curious if my YouTube observations are anywhere accurate. If this is indeed the case, I’d go for buying a second generation over a third-generation even though I admittedly like the third generation style better.

Extra weight + more gears. The gearing, and final drive ratio, in the 8 speed 3IS is just about the same as our 2IS 6 speed. But, it takes the 3IS 3 shifts to get to 60 while our 6 speed only takes 2. That's why the 3IS 350 AWD is a bit faster to 60mph than the 3IS 350 non-AWD as the AWD still retains our 6 speed. Logic states that the non-AWD would be faster to 60 than the AWD (extra weight, less gears), but this isn't the case. The 2IS does usually start becoming a slouch once you hit 90-100ish, while the 3IS will keep the power going due to those extra gears at those speeds.
TBH, I'd still rather have the 8 speed and the instant shifting paddle shifters in the 3IS versus the 6 speed and gear limiting shifters in our 2IS. I don't really see the tuning community fixing the paddle shifter issue for us unfortunately.

Funny though, my GS400 V8 gets about the same real-world gas mileage I've seen on some of these threads. 19-ish city, 21 combined, but usually 27 and even 29 highway.
So now I don't want one quite as much as I used to. But you never know.

On that note;
Was on a road trip previous weekend and saw some open scales and pulled little Mrs Piggy on one axle at a time.
Nose: 2,200lbs
Tail: 1,800lbs
Combined: 4,000 lbs /both axles
Full tank of fuel, two adults (not big piggies), coolers, gear, clothes....
oh and 25.5 mpg even at 80+mph most of the time including long steep passes.
The question is would the addition of 75ft/lbs of torquies keep me happy? Doubt it! But I'm ok for now. Glad it has the F-Sport option.

But I guarantee I can get a lot worse MPG in the city if I try

No tune here, but still fast. My 2010 IS350 Sport 0 to 60 run (5 seconds) https://photos.app.goo.gl/yDHEr5q75uhLQPL76

No Tune here either and not really any real proof but i can do 0-60 in 4.8s with no major changes to the Car besides Fsport CAI, Fsport Exhaust, secondary cat removed and a different resonator that really makes the car growl. I can hit 110km/hr (68mph) in 2nd gear.

In that video I launched at 3k (0.03 sec) and it appears to hit 60mph at 0.07 sec. mark and 80 just past the 0.10 sec mark. My video player lacks resolution to see the tenths so it's WAG.
It's pretty ok for a sedan tho! FWIW it had a very expensive load of fuel for that run ss well as low ambient temps and good traction.

Bringing this back up: the 3IS RWD doesn’t really look like it’s any heavier than the 2IS. Talking 70lbs.
Final gear ratios are nearly identical. Both are very aggressive, the 3IS even more so since it does need to shift one extra time before 60.
0-60 times notwithstanding, why does a 2IS walk away from a 3IS? On paper they should be neck and neck, with the 2IS just barely taking the lead at 60mph.
Doesn’t make sense.
