I am a dip****.. locked my keys under my hood lmao

So I was cleaning my throttle body and putting in new spark plugs. Quick and easy and painless. I have my keys on the inside of my hood for whatever reason I just placed them there. I closed the hood when I was done and when I walked into the house i realized oh crap I just locked them under the hood.

It gets worse.... I do Have a spare set that I keep in a small lockbox usually in my office in the house. On Friday I went to pick up my newborn sons social securty card and birth certificates so I put that lock box into my work bag and did all that Friday. Guess who left his workbag in the trunk? Me.

So my spare keyfob is in the trunk. My current key is under the hood. Car is locked. Buttons on handle arent unlocking the car and the trunk release button wont work either. ANY SUGGESTIONS?!

perhaps remove the underbelly panels and try to access the hood release cable to unlatch the hood. Where in the hood did you leave the key?

If your spare key fob is in the trunk, your car recognized the key is in range...open the trunk with the button on the trunk??

For some reason its not recognizing the key fob in the trunk. It is inside a small metal lockbox (not sure if that matters) but ive tried the trunk button and its not working.

spare key battery maybe dead

seanmwple 10-28-17 08:26 PM

Probably... soooooooooooooooo..............

Okay... false alarm... keys were in my tool box hahahaha

lol that must have been a crazy hour trying to get the keys from under the hood only to find it in your toolbox

Not that it ended up being an issue, per se, but the having the spare in a metal box can block the radio signal. Assuming his main keyfob was in a metal box that was closed, assuming the car was close enough, may explain why the car didn't see that one either.

Lol , gosh. Glad you found them.

Sorry, "in range" isn't good enough. The car has several antennas and triangulated the location of the key. The key has to be outside and aft of the trunk for the trunk button to work.

Sidenote, I'm glad Lexus had the foresight of putting an antennae in the trunk because on two occasions now I've left my key fob in the personal pocket of my golf clubs after playing a round. Both times I hoped to God that it could "read" that my keys were in the trunk, and it did! YAY Lexus!

This post reminded me to remind my wife to look for her spare fob again. She hid it so good somewhere in the house she now can't remember where. I've got two spare set for my car but her car only came with one spare which usually would be enough until you lose it!
I should find a thread here how to best get another spare before Murphy's Law strikes.

As a newb, a slightly off topic question. Will the doors lock if key fob is in front or backseat and door locking is initiated? Assuming battery is healthy.

IIRC I read something about programming all cabin zones or just drivers position. However I think this should only be applicable to start/run vs door locking, yes?

And it seems testing by leaving a window down may not apples to apples as the car knows the window (sun roof) are open.

Thanks...

OP - glad it all worked out!
