Question Auto dimming rear view mirror not worth a sh/t....

Maybe mine is defective but it does lesson the blare of bright lights but not by much.

How would you rate the effectiveness of the auto dimming RVM?

My rear view and side mirror's dimming function works great! Those new SUVs with LED headlights can be quite bright, and my mirrors at least are doing a good job of dimming them.

^^^ I only have the rear view dimming mirrors and I really enjoy it. Like Gville said, it does a great job dimming lights from behind. The auto dim should make the mirror become blueish green.

I think it works fine, but my rear window is also tinted so that probably helps a bit.

Thanks gents, maybe I need to look into a used one this one is a fraction of what I know they can do. My previous car, an 06 Mazda 6S hatch was great. This, not so much. Actually I miss the mirror compass too even tho this has Nav.

You can see this change but as stated some lights are so damn bright these days. FWIW there is no inspection here so pretty much anything goes legal or not.

I'll head to the part out list...

If you have auto dim, you should have compass too. Just hold the "AUTO" button for 3 seconds.

Have a compass in the mirror? No. In the Nav screen only...

I do have options for 3 different garage doors tho! lol

If you miss the compass, you can pull a mirror off something like a 10 GS350. That's what I did to have the new mirror style along with keeping the compass behind the glass (instead of some cars that have the little black background on the compass). I needed a new one anyways since the old style had issues with the auto dimming portion failing, and I wanted to keep the compass, soo, a 10 GS350 had just the exact mirror I wanted.

IIRC, newer models have the mirror without the compass. My RX doesn't have the compass either.

Likely depends if you have nav or not. My 2011 has the newer style mirror with compass.

Anyone have any clue if the dimmer in the mirror stands alone or does it interact with light sensor near the defroster? Testing says they are independent but I ask as the one flaw this car has is the light sensor has curled up a bit and is not down where it belongs. That said all dash and Nav lighting/backlighting work with this thing in the image. And no I don't want to pull dash apart to fix that!
Anyone know how its held in?

Mirror just senses light through the window.
Zmon, did you say your dimmer failed?

The mirror is completely independent (with the exception of the side mirrors, which dim when the rear view mirror dims -- if so equipped).

I've never used them, but a handful of people have posted positive results using this company ( http://www.radar-mirror.com/Mirror_Repair.html ) to replace the mirror glass after the electrochromatic coating failed. It's significantly cheaper than replacing the entire mirror.

iirc, that sensor in the dash is just for the auto headlights.

The older models (06-08) had issues with the mirrors electrochromatic coating failing and displaying black specks all over the glass, that's why I replaced mine with a newer one. I was going to buy the frameless mirror used in the new Lexus models, but I couldn't find one for a reasonable price when I was wanting to replace mine.
