Default Need new axle? Need advice on Dealer quoted repairs

Hi

My 2007 IS250 has ~105K miles and I recently took it for the 100K service. They told me there is some grease leaking from the passenger side of the rear axle and the the entire axle needs to be replaced coming in ~$1400.

Does this sound correct? What if I leave it. Is there a way to check how much it's leaking to determine if I really need to replace it yet or not?

Thanks

Take it for a second opinion just to be sure. Likely your boot is torn. A refurb/used part will only run you about $100-200. An independent shop should only charge about 2 hours of labor to do it at most.

Do you hear any noises from the rear? Clicking, clunking, popping?

Hi,

no noises. I had no idea until they told me. Good point. I will take it to an independent for second opinion. The thing that i was not sure about is they said the entire axle must be replaced as there was no way to repair it. That sounded fishy.

The effort and time it takes to replace the boot is far greater than replacing the axle itself that's why most shops would rather just replace the entire axle.

usually if the boot is torn, its probably allowed grit and road debris into areas where you dont want any. Most reliable shops recommend the entire axle for this reason alone.
