Hey guys, while looking for another headunit, I stumbled upon another. Read the description to see if it has the airbag issue as well and it does. BUT they state that the actual airbag system still works and you can just hire an electrician can just install a resistor to get rid of the dash light.
So a couple of questions: Do you think this is true? It doesn't really make sense to me that the airbag can work when the light is telling you its off. Does the resistor just get rid of the light but the airbag still wont work? I know nothing about wiring or things like that so maybe someone can chime in? And if this is the solution, maybe the resistor trick could work on the tesla style unit too?

Good luck passing smog or selling you car with that light on. Also airbag faults normally cannot be cleared by anyone but the dealer so double whammy.

The airbag off light in the picture is not the one that comes on when you install an aftermarket nav -- it's just showing you that light is missing causing the issue. The Asian market doesn't have that passenger airbag indicator light but the US cars do. When the airbag system detected that airbag indicator light is missing, it raises an error code and causes the airbag problem light in the CLUSTER to light up. It's possible to add a resistor to simulate the passenger indicator light, and the car would not raise an error code. Of course, you wouldn't know when the passenger airbag is on or off without the light if that's important for you to know.

I think we have been told by Lexus that the airbag will work, however you will fail you vehicle safety inspection if you state has one.
Here is Massachusetts we will fail even if the Maintenance light is on and all you need is an oil change.
I would love to get one of these, but this is the main point causing me to pass for now.

So, the idea about using resistors to make the light on the dash go away was one that came from this site. But I do not believe anyone has ever tried to do this. It was just a theory and has not been proven to work yet. The fact that someone is selling radios telling you its possible is astounding...

Hello guys, finally here comes my story and solution for the passenger airbag issue that many of you have waited for since a long time and nobody wanted to mess with his airbag system
As always everybody take it on his own risk. I only show what worked for my IS. No guarantee!
Short background: As you might know from the first thread I used to have the original looking thonzer navigation with the crappy sound and many issues. So i managed to send it back to thonzer and made them send me an updated model. By asking for details they told me that it will be the new tesla-style unit (same as Car-Da) I agreed even if I didn´t like the appearance that much in the beginning. They told me it doesn´t have the passenger airbag issue, so i accepted.
Well unfortunately it had the airbag issue as well (because I own the european Lexus IS model).
After days of research and visits of a handful of car navigation and hifi specialists, which all did not want to touch the airbag-security system, me and a friend of mine who is mechatronic technician decided to try it on our own. Here I have to thank MattaS for uploading the wiring diagrams. That was a big help.
First we bought a couple of different resistors, took the wiring diagrams and measured all relevant pins of the relevant connector when connected to the original unit (also we tested what happens by switching the airbag off and on). We figured out how the system works and how the voltage is changing by switching on and off.
What we figured out:
black 12V (Ignition)
Airbag ON:
- purple 12V
- grey 0.3V
Airbag OFF:
- gray 12V
- purple 0.3V
In the following graphic you can see that we put one 910-resistor between black (IG+) and purple (P-AB) and one 1500-resistor between purple (P-AB) and grey (PAON):
For me it is a great solution because if the passenger Airbag is switched ON the sytem light comes first up for couple seconds (thats normal system check) and then disappears. As soon as you switch OFF the passenger airbag, the system warning light appears and uses as new "passenger airbag indicator".
If you switch OFF the passenger airbag, the red airbag-system light comes back and stays. If you switch it back ON it stays faulty until you switch off ignition for couple seconds.
So thanks again espacially MattaS for the wiring stuff and your work so far and also thanks thonzer lady for always trying your best and beeing nice and friendly :P

First I wanted to build an adapter with the resistors in it but then I didn't want to wait and we cut the original wiring and add the resistors directly.

Yes, I had it on shortly before. You can set the time the unit remains on in the advanced settings up to one hour I think.

Has anyone else attempted this? I'm contemplating trying it myself. I'm surprised the manufacturer doesn't have a solution or adapter. It seems like the US would be a large market for them.
