Default Rear End - Whine

I just started to hear the rear end whine while at low speeds. I believe the rear end (AWD) differential is going out. I am going to change the oil to see if it was low due to a leak or a lot of metal but If it doesn't go away (might be damaged already) I will replace it. However, does anyone know if they go quickly? I am not having any other issues. I know that no one will be able to truly answer this but was wondering how much time I have. Weeks, months or years.

Are you sure it's not a wheel bearing?

I am not entirely sure. I have had a few wheel bearings go out and this doesn't seem like one. Just wondering if changing the oil will do me any good.

My rear end diff gear oil was like $10. Alot cheaper than a new wheel bearing. Maybe worth a shot to try it first.

It was the bearing. The change out was a B#$% but I got it done. Main issue was finding the correct wheel nut and taking off the hub.
