My daughter has a 2006 is250 rear wheel drive car. The trans has been acting up so she took it to a trans shop, they said the trans need to be rebuilt. It looks like I can get a new/used trans for cheaper but a rear wheel drive trans is about 3 times the cost of an all wheel drive trans. Can we put an all wheel drive trans in a rear wheel drive car? Will we have any problems?

I don't think they're interchangeable.

I called a local dealer and he felt the trans would bolt up and said the internal parts were the same, but didn't know about the extra output shafts. I asked my mechanic and his concern was that power goes to the wheel slipping and if nothing is hooked up to the front shafts that all power may go to them and nothing to the rear wheels

There are plenty of IS250 auto RWD transmissions on ebay that can be shipped under $500.
