So funny story, went over a speed bump the other day and my TPMS lights came on. I filled up my tires, but still saw the warning lights. I needed new tires anyways, and went to go get the rears replaced, but the lights are still on. Quick google search shows that my TPMS has kicked the bucket, this was confirmed by the Tire shop AFTER they replaced the tires...

So i guess i get to go back and get my TPMS replaced. $400 from local service, or more through lexus. Tire shop can do it for about $300

My question, if i get a 2nd set of TPMS for the pipe bomb trick, can I just sync it with the car as a second set? Or do I need to get it programmed by tire store before i can pipe it?

You can sync a 2nd set but will need the serial numbers off of them and Techstream to program them. Most tire shops have a tool they can use to program them I believe.

I've never once even rebuilt the ones on my '06 and they still work just fine. As many tires as I have been through I figured if I let the tire shop rebuild them every time I swap tires like they try and get you to do, I would have already paid for a brand new set for no reason. They are still working just fine.

^^^^^Rebuilding is mostly to maintain the air seal integrity of the wheel/tire assembly. The TMPS unit contains a non-replaceable battery with a finite life of 5 to 6 years, though some have gone up to 10 years. Beyond that, you're living on borrowed time.

Had this same issue recently. Got it done cheaper (well below $200) by buying 4 TPMS from Amazon (Denso 550-0103) and local Discount Tire charged me $8 per tire to get the TPMS installed and programmed (no balancing since they just "break" the tire bead, install, and inflate).
