Inner CV boot tear

So I was informed my inner CV boot is torn. Just curious as to how much I can expect to pay so I dont get ripped off? I have a local mechanic who is suppose to get back to me with an estimate. But he did say it would be cheaper as far as labor goes to replace the axle to. Is this necessary? I may take to Lexus to get an estimate. They actually repaired it the first time at 30k under warranty with just the boot kit.

I would like to say it depends on mileage. A good rule of thumb is 100k (although it kind of is a bit subjective). Over 100k? Just go for the whole axle (OEM reman?). Under 100k? Just do the boot.

Im at 80k and only do about 10k per year. Im looking to sell the car in the next year or two. Ill have to get some pricing on just the boot kit then with labor. If I did the axle it would be aftermarket.

The CV boot repair kit is inexpensive roughly $35.00. I had to change my left side b/c it was leaking and the labor was not bad if you are familiar with suspension.

I dont have the tools or lift to do the work. I have a mechanic in town that services the car. But he mentioned replacing the axle. I know when I had this done at 30k under warrenty Lexus just did the boots, no axle.

Axle will run you about $100 for either a re-manufactured part, or a used one. If you'd rather save a couple bucks and just not replace the whole axle, those boot repair kits are about $30 or so on eBay (or about $65 if you want the OEM Lexus kit) and just bring it to your mechanic. Replacing the axle or the boot should be fairly similar in labor (as replacing that boot isn't the easiest thing in the world), your mechanic should give you an estimate on both if he brings the parts. Might want to ask about a quote if you supply the parts as well.
