Is350 Engine Sound - Serpentine Belt?
Hi,
My 1-owner 06 is350 has a little over 156k on it. I do drive it fairly hard, especially when I make weekly commutes on i5 through the Central Valley. I've noticed it's been starting to make this sound when the car is stopped, but only when it is in gear. It goes away when in park/neutral. I've performed all of the recalls, but haven't done much besides basic maintenance and a tune-up. I know the car has an oil seap behind the timing cover for about 40k miles, but I've never felt the need to spend $3k to fix it if I monitor oil levels and do routine 5k oil changes. Any idea what this noise could be?

Check the tensioner pulleys. That sounds similar to a bearing on one of them going bad. If you've got a mechanic's stethoscope (can get one for less than 10 bucks at Harbor Freight if you have one nearby) you can CAREFULLY place the probe on non moving parts of the engine while it's running, and you should be able to pinpoint the source of the noise.

I had a very similar chirp in my accessory belt on my 2IS and immediately thought it was the pulleys. Just because I already had a new OEM belt sitting around and it only takes 5 minutes to replace it, I went ahead and installed it just for the heck of it. The chirp disappeared!
Not saying you'll have the same outcome, just saying it could simply just be the belt and not the pulleys. Start with purchasing a new belt!

No haven't had any obvious loss of power. I'll probably replace the belt and check the pulleys while its out. I appreciate all the input and help!
