Replaced Battery - Still Dead, Electrical Smell?
Hi Guys-
I was driving around last night and my car started acting up:
-Radio and nearly all electronics went dead
-Car still drove, but had no p/s
-When I revved it, it would get slightly more electrical power
So I parked the car and took a cab home. This morning, I went and replaced the battery.
-Car started and drove fine
-I could smell a hint of an electrical smell
-2nd time I tried to drive, car was 100% dead, nothing would turn on
So I have tried:
-Reinstalling the battery
-Cleaning the grounds
-Could smell a fairly strong electrical smell under the hood
No luck! There is some power at the battery as I rub the connectors, it sparks, but the car gets no power at all. I am thinking it's the alternator, and maybe the fuse at the alternator is blown? Thoughts? Thanks!

It was a brand new battery, drove it literally 10 minutes to the grocery store and it wouldn't start when I was done.
The electrical smell leads me to believe the alternator, but shouldn't I have some hint of power inside the car? Nothing at all turns on!

Sounds like the alternator. The battery just starts the car. The alternator provides power when your driving and charges the battery. Explains why power died when you were driving and why your new battery is dead.

not too sure about what you're asking but:
- your car is draining the power of the battery
- your alternator is dead so its not charging the battery
Normally, your battery will start the car and electronics while your car is off. While its running, your alternator charges your battery and powers your electronics

It's your alternator. Mine did the exact same thing. After it died, (with a 4-month old battery no less) My wife and I tried to jump it. Immediately smelled an electrical-burnt smell. Put a stop to that immediately. Towed it home and replaced the alternator with a lifetime reman AutoZone unit.
