Clunking sound from passenger rear - HELP
STORY:
So I was coming home from the library the other day, stressed out about exams and what not, and thought I'd have a little fun with my 250...
Long story short, Theres this dip (looks like a big depression in the road) in the far right lane, which I'm coming down, and right before I was on top of it, I cut left quick enough for most of my car to miss the dip... unfortunately, my passenger rear wheel when into it and made a tiny sound coming out of it..
I didn't think much of it so I slowed TF down and calmly carried on home...
PROBLEM:
2 days later (today): I'm getting this random clunking noise from that side...
If anyone has ever grabbed the bottom of their license plate cover and pulled it and let it go and it makes a rattle sound, thats what it sounds like... theres no squeaky sounds so i don't think its the shock.
I used to get the same sound ONLY when i drove over a railroad crossing, but now it makes it on the main streets!
Its random as well... on some bumps it makes sounds, on some it does not..
Anyone have any idea what this is? I will try and get it on a lift this weekend if possible..

Clunking sound from rear of es series
This could be your problem, in fact almost all es300's around 2000 have this noise. The culprit is worn rubber bushings at the ends of the sway bar. In your case, you may have bent the sway bar by hitting a hole at high speed. Anyway, I just replaced my sway bar bushings with great success.
The best replacements are made by MOOG. A pair is under 20.00. You need two floor jacks, one to raise the rear of the car up enough to comfortably fit and see the bolts you need to remove.(the rear wheels do not need to be removed). there are two 10mm bolts per side. The bushing is split, for easy installation. Just open it up and pop it on. You will need a block of wood about 6.5 in. long to keep the sway bar up near its regular position after the bolts are removed. This is of course the reason for the second floor jack.
