Tire Blowout - Saved by Warranty
So a few weeks back I bought new rear tires - special order 275/30/19
Discount Tire gave me a pretty substantial discount so I walked the sales guy through how to upsell their warranty to me (rather than facts he shared, I coached on finding pain points & drawing emotions/fear of loss).
I bought the warranty, thinking that in 20 years I have NEVER had a tire be punctured on the sidewall, and have only had the cheapest tires bubble or warp outside of coverage by the manufacturer...
Well, go figure, I came out to my car the other day and after hitting a VERY small pothole the day before, I saw the sidewall split from tread to wheel.
Head to DT, they ordered a tire and are putting it on as I type for a total cost of $1.47 Vs. $256.00 - all for a $60 warranty. I doubt I'll go without it again on low profile tires!
I had to get a rental car for the downtime, and paid the $16 for extra insurance... I guess I was just lucky for the last 20 years...
Then again, my logic was always "For every 4 sets of tires one gets blown out, so why pay $480 ($30/tire * 16 tires) when the one bad tire will cost so much less..."
At this rate though, I'm averaging 1:3 on problems with low profile tires... that makes it feel worth it to me!
What are your thoughts? Do you buy extra warranties?

I had never really thought about it before, and then I got new tires at Costco, which includes free road hazard. 3 months later, one pothole took out 2 tires. I was really glad to have the road hazard.
