Wow! It seems to me like you would have had to sign something. Ask your insurance agent.

Did you own the car or did the bank? Also I would ask a JD, they will be the best to advise on this.

Do you have title to the car, or is it financed? If it's not your car, its not your choice.

If you own the car: Ask your insurance agent if he authorized the repairs (preferably in an email). Then ask the auto repair guy who authorized the repairs. If he says no one, tell him you're not paying. If he says the insurance guy, tell him the insurance guy did not have authority to do that, and tell him you're not paying. He will probably then refuse to release the car to you under a mechanic's lien. Then you would have a local attorney write him a demand letter.

Also: find out if the mechanic has already been paid. IF you own the car, it should have been your choice whether the check from the insurance agent was written to you according to his adjustment, or to the shop according to their bill.

Don't just take it. Hunt down your adjusters; they're probably trying to avoid you because they know they screwed up. You're gonna have a much harder time selling the car now that it's been in an accident. Tell them you wanted a cash settlement, and if they try to screw you out of that, you might have a case with a lawyer on your side (since you never authorized the repair).

We as customers have to do our part to ensure the customer service sector doesn't slack and fall off, otherwise we start complaining about poor service. They have standards to maintain, and its up to us to point them out and rag on them when they screw up so they know what to fix/improve.
