My attempt at the DIY NAV screen repair w/ pics!
So today was the day I said I'd attempt this; overall it really wasn't too bad because I had all of the right tools. Today's attempt was just to first see how difficult it was to remove AND to only attempt to clean all of the ribbon contacts relating with the NAV screen systems with rubbing alcohol. Like others have mentioned, actually the removal of the center vent cluster was the most "difficult" part. Here's what I did about that. I used four thick "cake pop" sticks my wife had lying around from one of her many experiments. I used my handy set of Harbor Freight picks to pry down the plastic prongs and inserted a stick into each "hole". Once all 4 were set in, I used the one pick with a "hook" and inserted into the outer right top hole were the plastic prong was and managed to find a good spot to pry from. A couple slight yanks on it and that end came loose; then repeated this on the other side. Vents came out real slick actually once I figured out where to pry from. Here were the tools used on the vent removal and a close-up of the plastic prongs you have to deal with :
Then blue painters taped up the lower retractable ash tray cover and the threaded portion of the gear stick. Laid down a towel to cover everything else. Used some more blue tape on the 10mm socket to "grab" the bolt on those lower bolts. Didn't want to waste time removing the center console and fishing out those bolts. LOL! Worked like a charm! Pulled the unit out at far as I could and removed all of the connections to the NAV unit. You really DO NOT need to mark the connections to where they go because each port is unique. Moved the entire thing to my workbench and proceeded to take it all apart. Man...that was a lot of screws!
Like I said above, I was only cleaning the ribbon connections and re-seating the ribbons in their respected connectors to see if that helped. I used my "electronics-only" set of screwdrivers and assorted tools to work on the NAV unit; didn't want to make anything worse with static electricity! Here were the tools used here :
Pulled every ribbon and cleaned thoroughly and re-seated everything; unfortunately THERE WAS ZERO CHANGE to the behavior of the NAV unit.
Well, on to the next step...Dremel and circuit writer! Here's what the ribbon to my NAV screen currently looks like :
Doesn't really look "bad" in this shot does it :
And then check these out :
While pulling everything apart I took some close-up shots of some connectors. Hopefully these pics might be able to help someone down the road :
Flip up on the silver metal bar first and then push back the brown bar.

One of the 5 connectors I opened, cleaned the ribbon, and re-seated the ribbon; simple hinged design, pull up on the black portion closest to the ribbon itself :

So after I let the circuit writer "ink" bake under a 27 watt bulb for 5 hrs the ohm readings were 900ish on pins 1 & 3 and like 1800ish on 2 & 4. I thought, hey...close enough, I'll hook it up and hope for the best. Well, the screen is a no-go. But there is that 1% chance that it had not cured 100%. So we'll see tomorrow, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't work.
Anyhow, on to the next step...new screen from Ebay. Any recommendations? I've read of others getting a good one and other getting ones with a slightly pink tint to everything.

My in-laws helped hook me up with a family member that works in the local Toyota dealership service dept. He said he will have techs actually look at the individual components that make up the entire NAV unit and tell me what is wrong with it...not just flat-out say you need a new NAV unit like Lexus said. I'm going in tomorrow; wish me luck!

Toyota recommended me replacing the screen, for which I've purchased one this evening on ebay. They said that everything is getting power and all the related fuses are fine. Basically everything I already knew; but since my in-laws said they'd pay for the diagnostic fees, I went ahead with it. So I've got a new screen from China being shipped tomorrow; expected delivery between the 12th and the 20th. I'll report back once the new screen arrives and I install it

id posted this in the one big thread about the nav fix but all you need is a new digizier. 40 buxish and replace it with the current one. I placed mine directly over the top of the old one and superglued the two together. it works now and a lot more easier than circuit writing. just like oyu i originaly tried circuit writing and a no go.
