The only times I've used my paddle shifters in my 2007 IS250 AWD were in a few instances when I wanted to show off my Blitz Sonic Power / JoeZ pipe combo and a few times in the Tail of the Dragon when I went with HKS350 years ago. I kept it at most of the time 3 because you didn't have room to get into 4th. A few hairpins is where I brought it down to 1 so I could blast out of them. I think I could count on 1 hand how many times I was able to get it to 4th.

Other than that, our paddle shifters are quite effing useless. You floor it and it'll kick down on it's own. You tell it to upshift with your foot down and it won't until it just before the rev limiter or about 500 rpm before if it's in sport mode. Most of the time, I wondered why even bother adding the cost of incorporating paddle shifters if the car was going to decide for you when it's going to shift anyway. Soooooooooo freaking stupid.

I actually use them quite a bit. Mainly to downshift when exiting the fwy, before a turn, coasting downhill, or driving on the street and keeping the car revved higher for better control at partial throttle.

It does basically what I usually do in an actual manual transmission car, since I can determine when/if I need anything more than 4th gear.

What I do wish, is that there was a way for the 06 to behave like the 2012, where the car can be in D and the down shift paddle still activates. The 06 requires me to use S mode to enable the paddles.

Hi from Belgium ....

Just a little question related to Viprtwo post :

What the difference between the gearbox of 2006-2008 Is and those after...
Those where you can use the paddles even in D ....

Is it a hardware change of can we just flash the ECU to gain this option ???

They are useless, I shift using the stick shift all the time. In fact, how do I remove the paddles? so I can throw them in the trash.
