Lightbulb Car whining even after waterpump & idler pulley replacment

2006 IS350
129xxx Miles

Drove to campus and the car was fine. Started it up to go back home and heard this obnoxious whine. Its not the timing chain and its not my speakers either as i made sure the audio was off.

Leads me to believe my water pump is on its way out. Got home to check the service history and there is no record that the water pump was ever replaced. Research shows that the whine is an indication of water pump failure.

Is there anything i should consider before assuming it is definitely my water pump ? Coolant level seem fine and the car was operating at regular temp. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Your help is appreciated.

regards.

UPDATE:

Dealership said water pump was leaking. While replacing the water pump they called and told me my idler pulley has play in it. I got both the water pump and the idler pulley replaced.

Pick up the car today and it still has the whine which was the only reason i took it to the dealership in the first place. What else could it be ? I cant just have them start replacing parts they "think" are the reason.

water pumps make a growling sound if the bearings are going bad. whining would be something like an alternators internal components failing.

This is like a process of elimination . What would you suggest I do so can narrow it down, or am I stuck taking it to the dealership ?

Here is a prime example of this whine. Just not as loud.

if it increases as you drive and its high pitch then its your alternator. mine started and two days later it was shot. just get it checked it could save you in time and towing.

It is as u describe. I didn't drive the car all weekend . Started it up and the whine is extremely loud with a stuttering idle. Few seconds later the idle was fine but the whine was present.
Drove to campus so by now the car was warm. It drove just fine and now the whine is not as loud. Before I left I parked the car and listened for the whine. Still present but not as loud when the car was cold.

I'm totally confused.

I heard a bit of a whine last week and my alternator died Saturday morning. It made it about a day and a half. I could smell a little bit of burning when I raised the hood too, so that's something to check.

Well according to Lexus of Memphis, it's my water pump that's leaking and has play in it.

I'm quoted :

Water pump $210.72
Coolant $43.42
Belt $58.88

Labor $440
Shop supplies $30
Environmental fee $5
Business tax $2.26
Tax $73.10

Total $863.38

That's a bit steep in my opinion.

Alternator or tensioner pulley is all that is really left. Never heard anything about the A/C compressors going bad in the 2IS model...yet.

when i paid for the diagnostics, should they not have figured out the cause of the whine instead of having me replace other parts. Given the parts needed changed, the initial reason for the diagnostics was that whine....

I'm totally with you on that one! I'd go back as soon as possible complaining about the fact the issue you brought the vehicle in for is still there and your "diagnostic charges" were good for nothing. Perhaps they'll refund you some funds or put it towards fixing the REAL issue.

OFFSPRING:

Did you ever find out what was causing the whine in your vehicle? I have the same problem and I am being told that there is nothing Lexus can do to help me.

Thanks for your help.

apologies for bumping an old thread. it was the alternator pulley. i got the alternator replaced which came with a new pully eliminating all sounds.

I was told its usually a pully when u hear the whine.
