Default IS250/350 Intake Sound Generator Installation (3IS/4GS)

This came up about a month ago in another thread, someone had found someone selling one of these setups on eBay and was wondering if it was worth it. I know there is a couple of people who have done this in Japan in various cars, and at least one person here on CL modified his stock rubber pipe and clamped the sound generator on it, but there wasn't a lot of information about doing this in English that I could find.

I decided to purchase these parts from a GS250 for my IS250 and see what kind of difference it would make, I couldn't find much information other than people seemed to think one of two things, either it was a waste of money because it just sounds the same as an F-Sport intake box, or it is awesome and everyone should do it (in Japanese of course). So I ordered the parts in the hope that it is awesome, as I don't have an F-Sport intake and don't really want one, I'd rather leave things more factory looking.

Part numbers:

17881-31280 – Hose, Air Cleaner to Throttle (3.5L Engine, 2GR-FSE)
17881-31290 – Hose, Air Cleaner to Throttle (2.5L Engine, 4GR-FSE)
17898-31010 – Creator, Intake Sound
17113-31010 – Pipe, Sound Creator to Intake Hose
96111-10500 – Clamp, Intake Pipe (Qty: 2)
91671-80616 – Bolt (Sound Creator to Pipe)
23841-31100 – Clamp, Fuel Hose
12262-31150 – Hose, Ventilation (from Valve cover to Intake Pipe, not required, but I ordered it so that the hose would fit perfectly with the different angle)

I am planning on installing it tonight, feedback on how it sounds to come, but here are some pictures anyway.

The sound generator is made by Mahle, some information about it can be found in the US patent filing from Mahle Japan in 2011.

Nice. Thanks for going forward and taking the lead on this. Looking forward to your results...

I'm wondering if this intake tube is paired up with a cone filter, will the cone filter drown out any sound from the noise generator or will it flow nicely together.

How much did you pay for all that? Looking forward to your review.

I was planning on going the joez route and cutting a hole in my air-box for sound, that way I get noise and a tiny bump in HP. However I would be very interested in this if this is significantly cheaper than the joez.

I'm not sure how that would end up reacting, not because it would drown out, but because you'd just have multiple intake sounds, so it may not sound all that great when mixed together. Trial and error I suppose.

Retail price on these parts from Lexus USA is about $230. If you order from Sewell or similar (LexusPartsNow.com, etc.), you can probably get them for a bit less. I had mine shipped directly from Japan and I haven't figured out the total yet (had them sent with another shipment).

I also am looking forward to hearing how it sounds. I hope there isn't too much snow on the roads tonight so I can go for a drive. I already have my Dunlop Z1's on the car, so any snow/cold is a bad idea, lol.

It was 18C here last week too, haha. Now it's -8C.

I did drive the car tonight, though. Review to come.

Interesting, but wonder if there's any HP increase. If not then the F Sport intake sounds better to me.
