Default g2 caliper paint kit, does not include/require primer?

So ive been looking to buy a g2 kit to paint my calipers, and the only thing i see that the kit does not include is a primer. I was going to buy some primer, but didnt want to mess up the whole process with applying it. My question is, should i apply primer, or just use the g2 kit contents?
I have heard to do it both ways.

Use a stiff steel wire brush to knock all the previous paint off and debris. Clean with brake cleaner. Ready to apply the paint of your choosing.
