Just purchased an 06 IS250 with 55,000 original miles.

Check engine light and VSC light is on (bought it that way because im not scared of doing a little work). Scanned it and it pulls code P0430. I suspect an oxygen sensor is failing, or at least I hope. I could not imagine the catalytic converter failing in 50k miles.

Anyhow I was just curious that since its the post cat sensor would it be worth a go with a universal sensor that you pick up at the parts store? Anyone had any luck with them? Hard to install? Or just not recommended?

Any help and advice appreciated.

My experience is that you get what you pay for with O2 sensors. Your best bet is getting a Denso or NGK O2 to replace the factory one. I'd pass on the universal or Bosch units.

Your car is still under emissions warranty. Get the driver side catalytic converter replaced at Lexus. I had the same code about a month or two ago. They said it could be exhaust leaks or a bad O2 sensor or the cat. One thing you can do is clear the code. Swap the O2 sensors around (driver to passenger) and (passenger to driver). If P0430 shows up again, it's a bad cat. If P0420 shows up, it's a bad O2 sensor since the problem went to the other bank. I got my catalytic converter replace under warranty at 64K miles. It's been on since 57K but I've always ignored it.

Good luck! Also, changing out the O2 sensors is a b***** cause you have to remove the front seats and lift up the carpets to reach the plug that's at a really bad location.

I pulled a P0430 code on my 05' Nissan Frontier V6. I had to change out the driver side front Cat. Problem solved. I was 120k miles when I threw the CEL.
