Default 2012 IS250 Gas Tank Capacity/Mileage Question

I have a new 2012 IS250 with only 600miles. I thought the gas tank holds around 17gallons, but when I refill the car with the low gas warning lights up, it only takes 13.5gallon to fill it to full. And the car computer says I only have 39miles left when I average 26mpg. My question to you guys is, how many gallons does it take for you guys to fill up your IS250 after the warning comes up? And is this normal? Should I get it checked at the dealer?

That is about right because even thou it is a 17.2 Gal / 65L tank, about 2 gallons is for the sub-tank which is for reserve. In terms of refilling, you you would be filling up to about 15 or so assuming range is 0.

The warning varies however theoritically it comes on about 30 miles left before it range approx saids 0. Once it saids 0, the tank is empty but now you're using up the gas which is in the sub-tank which is something one would not want to do unless under the circumstances however it should give another 20+ (using about 1 gallon of the sub-tank) miles which is more than enough to find a gas station to refill. A or a few members said (I don't remember which one), they ran out completely short of the gas station; however they knew they were already running on fumes (way past 0, like negative ha ha!) but since they lived closed by it wasn't too muich of a problem walking to fill up their gas container.

For me, I typically refill when it reach close to 0 or 0. There is also some member say that could be better to refil when the tank reachs to 1/4 because the fuel pump does not work as hard and also keeps the pump cooler.

I almost always do it around the quarter mark, if and when the light comes on its usually just under 16 gal to fill up...

Hope that helps.

The reserve is also needed to keep the fuel pump submerged and cool. Use up the reserve, and likelyhood of fuel pump overheating goes up, so does failure potential.

I'm glad someone posted this question as I just bought a IS350 and I have a 100 mile per day drive. I live in SC (cheap gas) and work in NC (higher gas) so I REALLY wanted to get 4 days between fillups. I have almost the same senario Im getting 28MPG and my light came on with 36 miles left and I just happened to be 1 mile from the gas station. I filled up and it only took 13.9 gallons....so that left me with 17.2-13.9=3.3 gallons to go 36 miles....

So what happens if you go more than a mile when you have 0 miles left (and 2 gallons in the tank)...does it read a negative number?

When the number estimate goes to 0, it stays there.

Even thou the estimate goes at 0, you can at least go safety about another 20+ miles ago using up a gallon so gives you some extra distance to be able to find a gas station. I would not exercise this thou or using past a gallon of the sub-tank unless under the circumstances; a few members have done that by going way past such that their sub-tank was nearly empty or that the engine had shut down; luckily these members in question lived near a gas station and were trying to get there in the process when the car shut off.
