My car was at the shop getting the frame repaired and apparently the mechanic drained my refrigerant so my A/C didn't work. Today, I bought one of those DIY kits to refill the A/C and now it works fine but I only used one can. Anyone know how much refrigerant is needed to make the system full?

Well, most of those DIY kits now come with a dial/gauge with the can that show when you are at the optimal level/pressure. Did you not get one of those I guess?

This is correct. Its also a good idea to do a vacuum evacuation before adding the freon.

yeah theres a sticker somewhere telling you how many lbs it holds. you dont want to have too much or too less

^ Uh oh, I couldn't find out in time. Everyone was telling me anywhere from 2-3.5 pounds is the average car. I went to Autozone and bought an 18 oz can and refilled the A/C. It had like 5 PSI left before I filled it. The compressor wasn't coming on either.

The gauges were on there but the problem was that my dumb self didn't think and went ahead to put the refrigerant in right after I got home from Autozone. As I was waiting, I was trying to figure out what was meant by "ambient" temperature since the outside air was like around 60 but the engine bay and my garage warmed up and the bay was like 100. So I didn't know which reading to go with but after one can, I got 45 PSI. I guess I overfilled just by the slightest bit. Should I be concerned that I'm about 3-4 oz over?

And I'll eventually vacuum it out for 30 minutes in the summer time when I get the chance and refill it to the correct amount.

you need the right amount or the ac wont get as cold..
if you have too much or too little... at-least that is my impression.

Too little the compressor wouldnt click on, too much the freon lines freeze up. One big can should do the trick, is the ac ice cold? If not add a little more or take it to a shop to measure and top off if needed

Hopefully there wasnt sealer in the can of r-134 or you will be replacing the entire system.
AC is not something that DIY should be messing with.
Trying to save a few $$ can cost $$$$$$$$$$$

A/C is working fine now. Air is pretty cold.

And the can didn't have sealer in it. It was just some "synthetic" refrigerant with some oil in it.

Where did you find the low pressure gauge? I found the high pressure one in the front next to the driver said headlight but looked for an hour for the low pressure one. Any help?

On my 1995 ES300 the low pressure guage is located under the hood on the passenger side all the way towards the back. It has a black cap with L on it.
