Well, wish me luck this week. I just received a replacement screen from e-bay to fix my frozen one. I'm going to see about taking things apart with the info here and hopefully things will work again. If all goes well, I'll have a spare broken screen to see if I can fix or send to someone here.

Success! The replacement screen from germanaudiotech on e-bay has been successfully installed. All touch-screen functions are working again. A local car audio shop handled the replacement for me for a very reasonable price.

Did mine yesterday. $20 for the digitizer panel from ebay, one afternoon to take the head unit out, one evening to change the panel and a couple of hours to test it and then reassemble the column and re-install. Royal pain in the a$$ but a LOT cheaper than having the dealer fix it!

Just as an aside, I first got the panel ($60, thinking a more expensive panel might be better quality) from a seller on ebay who used plenty of packing but didn't secure the ribbon cable properly and it tore at the panel. He replaced it with a second one and it had exactly the same problem. So I got a cheap one from another seller who didn't pack it quite so profusely but did secure the ribbon cable. Everything turned out A-OK!

Just finished replacing my digitizer on my 08 GS 460. This instructions for the IS were helpful but the GS was quite different and you kind of had to figure out the differences on the fly. I have to admit, I was having my doubts when trying to take the unit apart to access the screen but and the end of the day the replacement worked - i was surprised!
Got my screen on ebay (carbondna) - first one arrived with broken pigtail but supplier replaced it with another.
I saw several comments about rainbow effects - from what i read you only get that if you forget to take off the protective film on both sides of the digitizer.
Now moving to replace a headlight unit due to moisture.

You need a digitizer. Pretty simple job
