Default IS 250 oil at 47k miles, synthetic vs. regular

Hey. Recently bought IS 250. I need change oil but unfortunately I don't know what oil is in the engine right now, previous owner didn't know either.
Oil cap says 5W30 and I going to stick to this spec, my hesitation now is about synthetic vs regular and the brand. I won't go to the dealer to change it, I going to do it by myself. Car has 47k miles. I found really good deal on oil in Sam's club store. There is 6qt of Mobil1 5W30 for $35 but one small problem this is fully synthetic. Some say that is better to not to put full synthetic @ 47k miles especially you don't know what is in the engine (could be synthetic could be just regular oil) cause you might ruin engine. I am wondering what are you guys have in your engines? I don't like to save money on engine oil - so tell me pls about a good stuff for IS 250 engine. Thanks.

i would use SYN. idk how SYN would mess up an engine at 47k. it would hurt it going from regular to SYN

You'll be fine with synthetic. Plenty of others on this forum use that exact same oil. 10k oil changes are much nicer than 5k. Register as a CL member and order the filter and gaskets through Sewell:

I think same way. But if I have regular oil now (the most possible) change to SYN should not hurt anyway right? I truly doubt I might have some sludge built already in the engine what do you think?

I think it won't hurt anything, and I've got practical experience to confirm it.

I bought the same box of Mobil 1 and bought one more quart at the auto parts store cause the car uses 6.8 quarts. Then I bought some filters from Sewell Lexus with the Club Lexus discount. Great deal!!

it wouldn't hurt it. i get customers to switch from regular oil to SYN. as for sludge built up, idk if the oringal owner kept up with oil change. if you are doing your own oil change then you can drain and fill your oil at every 1k a few times. i did that when i had my integra and oil would come out clean.

Sometime back, I pushed 12k miles on Mobil 1 in my '08 IS 350 and sent the oil in to blackstone for a used oil analysis. The results said that I was pushing the oil by going that far - however, he did say that if I changed the filter halfway through the interval, I should be ok. I put up the UOA somewhere. I can attach it again if it's needed.

Now that I know how to change my own oil, I'll be able to go in on my own and change the filter (speaking of which, I need to do this soon).

Appreciate all you for the answers. I see there is nothing to worry about switch from regular to SYN right? Then I going to do that soon. In the matter a fact I am Castrol Fan but anyway Mobil 1 5W-30 should be good choice?
I am wonddering what kind of oil Lexus dealer would fill up my engine if I'd go there for oil change? Anybody knows?

Register on the Sewell website. It will ask if you are a Club Lexus or My.IS member. Give them your username for CL and it automatically qualifies you for the discount.
