Dealer can't disable DRL

:uh: I was at the dealer today and he said its not possible to disable DRL on 06 I350 or a 07 ES350. He said these cars come factory with DRL the only time you can disable them is if you have the switch on the stalk.

Outside a white ES350 was parked with white led parking lights I asked the owner he said he got his disabled I told the SA he said the owner must not have hi-beams. Is it true you can't disable DRL? I waste 3 hours and paid about $450 in work and I could not even get my DRL disabled.

Yes you can. Unless your in Canada. They just didn't want to. They have to use their Intelligent Tester to disable them. Take it to another dealer.

They probably they did not be liable if something happened if they turned it off and you and complained.

I got mine done back in '06.

I had 2 oil changes done and one 45k service and a TPMS issue fixed which all costed me $450. I thought DRL were under LPS? I could have sworn they were.

They are under the LPS. Some you can do yourself and others such as the DRLS have to be done at the dealer.

Its possible unless its different for 06 models i know a person with a 2010 that did it maybe they didn't understand what you were asking then to do

The disabling of the DRL's is NOT an LPS menu item, but they can easily be turned off by the intelligent tool they use. Here is a list of things that can be adjusted on a ca. 2006 IS, what you want is the item on page 4 under Light Control called aptly 'DRL Function'. Print the page off and give it to the tech and ask him to do it. If he refuses for safety reasons tell him there is no law or requirement for DRL's in the USofA. In fact there is a switch on the stalk of the 3rd Gen RX (2010+) to enable the user to switch off the DRL's with one flick.

Most techs have never seen this list so don't be surprised of they are ignorant of all the things that can be changed or tweaked on these cars.

Yes my old RX 3rd gen had that. Is that list also compatible for a 07 ES350?

I went to McGrath Lexus here in Chicago to have them disable my DRL on my '07 IS350 cause I got tired of the yellow when I have white/blueish lights in my whole car. They initially wanted $59 to do the simple 2 minute job. My car came back half an hour later with the DRL on! The dude came out and told me he could not disable them and that I won't obviously have to pay the $59. I told him it can be done and I knew how! He tried to assure me it can't be done but that he'll try again. So he came back with a laptop, hooked it up to the car somewhere behind/under the steering wheel. He then opened up some program, clicked "Light Control", and surely enough there was the "On/Off" choice for the "DRL Function". So he put it to "Off' and that was done. I ended up not paying anything since he said he told his service adviser it couldn't be done.

So yes, it's probably the same procedure for the ES350.

DRLs can easily be turned off using a techstream at any Toyota or Lexus dealership...the reason why some do it and some don't is because they are essentially disabling a safety feature on the car, which they are not supposed to do (just like the seatbelt warning chime)...totally at the dealer's discretion, but they shouldn't tell you it can't be done, just that they are not comfortable doing it for liability reasons...
