Default Navigation is terrible

Hey guys,

I recently just got my 06' IS250 with Nav, and it is driving me insane. It seems like every time I pull my car into the garage, when I pull out the next day it has no idea where I am, and never fixes itself. I drove roughly 20 miles round trip today which is longer than my usual 2 mile commute to work, and it was snapping me to roads all over the place and eventually was snapping me to roads over a mile away.

Are these GPS systems always this retarded, or might there be something wrong? I know that the DVD is the original that came with the car, but I did not think that would make it THAT retarded until I make my way to the stealership.

Do you guys think it is just the disc, or maybe something else wrong?

Sounds like you have 1550 firmware. They updated the firmware a few times since then, you'll want an upgrade to at least 1600 to fix the nav GPS issues.

Probably a n00b question, is the firmware update on the 2010 map DVD?

Yes. 1550 firmware was updated by a TSIB a very long time ago to 1650 which took away the nav override capability without a dedicated device. A relatively small number of cars built between May and December of '06 came with 1600 firmware which fixed the nav issue and retained the nav override capability.

I only know this because I bought one of the 1600 firmware cars - never had the GPS issues and still had the override capability. 1550 had bizarre issues with locking on GPS.

Interesting, I wonder how in the hell the previous owner never took it in to get this fixed lol...

Does the TSIB expire I assume? As in there is no way that I could likely get this fixed without paying $300 for the DVD?

Also, is there a way I can easily identify the firmware version? Is it on the same screen that shows the DVD version?

Thanks for the info, you are a big help!

You can get a new disc for about $200 from Sewell.

You can probably find someone selling an older-than-current-but-newer-than-yours disc for less.

The TSIB is still "valid" but it's only free if the car is within the warranty period, which, excluding extended warranties, no 2006 models are anymore.

This is a good reason to stay away from first year model when buying used.

Something later than 1650. 1650 was the 2007 firmware. There are a number of threads about this from back in '07.

Kinda strange software versioning system, heh.

Incade, I have a 2007 IS350 that I updated to the 2009 nav. I can sell you my old 2007 disc for like $15 shipped if you want it. You can think of it as buying me a 6-pack for my trouble and shipping costs.

If you'd prefer something newer, that's cool. Just throwing it out there.

(Sorry if this shouldn't go in this thread... I wasn't planning on selling the disc, but I figure I'll help this guy out if he's interested in an older disc with fixed firmware.)

Right, because there were no TSB's for the 2007+ models.

For the record, I was able to fix this today (I just finally got time to do something about it).

I pulled the whole unit out, reconnected every wire.. nothing. Then, I found somewhere about pulling the TV1 (Fuse 4) under the steering wheel column. So, I did that, left it out for a minute, put it back in and after the firmware loaded again, GPS lock came up! Thank god.

I am still going to go buy the new 10' Nav DVD though.
