Default New intake filter installed = reduced mpg

I recently replaced my intake filter and i noticed that i was getting worse gas mileage than i did with the dirty intake filter. i usually get about 24 mpg but now im getting 19 mpg. this is off the tank average reading.

I was thinking that it could have been due to the more power output. i did notice that it is more torquey which makes sense. more and faster air movement without too much resistance and better combustion.

If anyone has any knowledge or experience on why this is happening, please let me know.

I actually tried to switch between F sport pipe + Oem box and F sport intakes just to see if there is any MPG difference.

I drove with OEM intake for 3 months and F sport intake for 3 months and my results are:
with F sport intake: around 18.5 MPG all the time
with F sport with OEM intake box: 20-21 MPG all the time

So there can be a difference in changing the filter too.

Are you sure you did not drive more aggressively after changing the filter?

That seems logical but I'm running the oem intake and oem filter.

are you calculating the MPG yourself your relying on the tank avg to get the MPG?

I was looking at display on the dash. I usually know how many miles I get after getting to a 1/4 tank of gas. This time it was burning up much faster. I usually get to about 90 to 100 miles on the 1/4 tank. Now its about 75 miles.

I was thinking about this for a little more and could the cold weather in MA contribute? Cold air makes more power but use more gas. Hot air uses less gas.

You really need to calculate the ACTUAL mpg's. Fill up the tank til the pump 'clicks'. Reset the trip to 0. Drive around, fill the tank again, divide total miles driven by gallons. If you do this both on the oem intake and the new filter it will get you comparable results. This is the best way to rule out most of the variables that are controllable.

your gas is winter blend. prevents it from freezing. i consistently get worse fuel economy when they switch over. it's just a part of living in colder climate.

Bingo.......exactly! My cars dropped off 3 mpg because of the blend!

i actually had swapped in and out my f sport intake, f sport intake box and filter compared to the regular pipe filter and box. same thing. less gas mileage with the f sport intake box and filter.

Thanks for all the answers and replies. Finally makes sense on why. I thought there might have been something going on with the car.
