this is good info for everyone. especially considering the high water pump failure rate.

What sound are you guys hearing to indicate a failing water pump?

^Usually a whining pulley noise or pink crust underneath the pump itself.

I am picking up my car today after being checked out for a cam gear noise when starting up. It has been going on for about 10K miles but it was happening randomly so it was difficult to diagnose. Anyway, they also found I have the "rough idle" issue and will be replacing my pistons. (Sounds like a sweet deal but hope that's actually true in terms of the engine block being opened and susceptible to new problems) So when they get the pistons in, in about 6-8MONTHS (RIDICULOUS), they are recommending the water pump replacement since they can do it without charging me for the labor if done at the same time as the pistons. I have 73K miles and no known issues with the pump. The consultant told me it's standard to replace at 90K. Does that sound right to everyone? If this is a failing part like I'm reading, I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace it early?

And side question about my cam gear issue... this issue appeared before my warranty expired but wasn't properly diagnosed until after. Any recommendations on course of action I should take with Lexus to get this done for free? As of right now, they want to charge me for the parts but not the labor because it'll be performed when the pistons are replaced too.

It's not "standard" to replace it at 90k. But it seems like for the IS250 a good number of people are seeing water pump failure between 60-80k or so. If they are going to replace it without charging you for labor, I would just get it done. When they did my water pump replacement, I had them replace my serpentine bet as well - it's a fairly cheap part and it comes off when doing the work anyways.

Also with the cam gear issue, did you take it to the dealer for the problem before your warranty expired? If its an issue you brought up before your warranty expired, but couldn't get it repaired at that time you would have a better chance at getting them to cover it.

^^I would go ahead and have them put on the new one, just so long as they charge you minimal labor. Same with the new belt.

I'm going to get this done for peace of mind. Do I order just the water pump, water pump gasket, and coolant?

Default Water Pump service Bulletin

I was told the same thing at the Dealer when I went for a service with the Water pump replacement cost of $879.
I did notice a slight pink color near the pump but not other problems.- i.e. no fluid on the floor or overheating or any noises.
The dealer Advisor at Lexus told me that if there is Any coolant around the water pump it has to be leaking. I wanted to show him the service bulletin below but he did not want to listen.

Look at the Lexus service Bulletin that may help clarify the problem.

or the URL below.

Default Unreliable pumps!

I have an 07 2is and my water pump has a slight leak in it. now it's to the point of having the "rotten egg" smell coming into the cabin. Are there any threads that have a pictorial DIY replacement?
