On occasion, when I start my car it makes a pretty bad sounding cranking noise about the same time the needles on the tach and spedo hit their limits during the startup sequence. The problem is this doesnt happen every time I start the car. I've tried recording the startup with my cell phone however I've got like 20 recordings and all of them are "normal" startups. Anyone have any ideas what this could be (based on my very vague description)? If I ever do get an audio clip, I'll be sure to post it here.

 

my mazda makes a very bad sound on startup too.. in my case, it's the starter (common problem)
