Hit a Curb today. @#$%
I agree, take-off OEM wheels are plentiful and cheap in rich urban areas. And who wants pay higher insurance rates for years after the incident.
The reason i want to use the insurance is because, there is chipped paint on 2 fenders. the front left and the front right. I also need 2 tires (at least for now), one front and one rear. and three wheels, either fixed or replaced. plus who knows what happened to the suspension yet.
If i just get some 08 wheels on ebay or even sewell, itl be well less than a grand, but im not sure about the paint job. also 2 tires will be at least 400 bucks more.
Im paying 850 bucks per 6 months. I dont think my insurance will go up because I purchased the premium plan that has some kind of accident forgiveness. If it still goes up, I dont think it will go up for more than I would have to pay if i fix it myself which will be at least 1500-2000 bucks.
my deductible is 400 bucks.
any opinions? if my reasonning has a flaw please let me know. thanks
Ive made a list of things to do and to check. I will have an inspector come in monday and give me the estimate, then i can take the car to a shop of my preference and get it fixed with the insurance money.
how much shoul the estimate be for:
front left wheel (replace or fix)
front right wheel (replace of fix)
rear right wheel (replace or fix)
rear right tire
front left tire
front left fender paint chips
rear right fender paint chips
and maybe other unknown parts.

Whoa are the stock summer tires really that bad to use in cold weather?
I haven't had a chance to get myself a set of winter tires yet and took my car out a few times in sub 30 degree weather and it seemed ok, but after reading this thread I'm kind of nervous now about taking it out until I get new tires....
I drove pretty careful every time I took it out in cold weather but still and everything feels all good but still... from your story I'm getting the idea that your tires just lost traction out of no where b/c of the cold weather..

The IS did well in the snow for me with the trac off. I had the LM-25 from Blizzak and it was a good set up. I went with 17" take off rims/tires from Tire Rack. This season I am on 18" OEM rims and I dont see any difference. G/L
I'm not sure of the exact circumstances but I'm inclined to blame the tires here. The Turanzas that come on the car are complete pieces of crap. The sticker lists them as high performance tires but they belong to the lowest class of summer tires, something known as 'Grand Touring'.
Another thing that really disappointed me was the incredibly low treadwear rating of 160. A treadwear that low usually means you could expect the tires to be made of chewing gum rather than chiseled out of granite.

Depending on your insurance coverage, you may be eligible for accident forgiveness.
If you get your car fixed at your Lexus dealership, there's a good chance you could do what you were asking. Many dealerships are on approved repair shop list for insurance companies. That means insurance companies do not necessarily send adjusters out to take a look at the damage. The dealership writes up the claim, submits a bill, and you pony up the deductible. So if you can reach an understanding with your dealership repair manager, you could in fact order some aftermarket rims and just pay the difference plus deductible.
Is it kosher? Well, technically, the insurance company isn't out any more money. But the dealership might be hesitant to do this because they will have to in effect forward false info to the insurance company. It's not as bad as having a body shop inflate the repair cost to cover your deductible (body shop gets full price for work, you pay no deductible, and insurance company loses $$) though.
