Default Tpms

I apparently need new tires for my IS250. The dealer quoted me $272/tire. They also said that I should not do it anywhere else because I would need to replace the TPMS whenever I change tires. But isn't TPMS mounted onto the rim?

For those of you that have only gotten your tires, (not rims), changed at other places besides the dealership, is there any kind of protocol that they need to follow in regards to having the TPMS.

BTW: Warning light is not on, they said that only when the warning lights comes on, i would need to take it to the dealership to be reprogrammed.

thanks

Don't believe the dealer BS. Any decent tire shop can put new tires on it and leave the Tpms intact. They are just trying to gouge you.

Most tire shops should know how to deal with the tpms.

Yeah, replace the sensors with every tire change, and the engine, trans, interior, etc. That dealership is really full of cr@p telling you that only they should touch your tires/rims. There are sooooo many cars with TPMS these days (as they are standard equip), I can't imagine a decent tire shop not being able to handle a tire change without damaging your sensors.

no need. its all bs and a gimmick to get u to pay more. I had my front tires swapped and remounted due to bad inner tire wear. no problems no need to get new sensors or to reprogram or anything.

I agree, pretty much, but you would not believe how many tire/wheel shops break those sensors. They are extremely fragile and break easily. Even Lexus dealers sometimes break them on accident. If a shop has never done one before I can pretty much assure you, they're gonna break them. You have to know what you're doing.

Yes, they can be easily transferred by the tire shop.

You may want to consider buying a second set, if you plan on ever using your other wheels again...

peehole813....haha your profile name makes me laugh. Go to discount tire/America's tire. They should be able to put on your new tires with no tpms problems.

yeah it's now required on all new vehicles under 10,000 lbs GVWR starting September 2007. Most tire shops should be able to deal with them without any problems. I was just at discount tire centers this past saturday asking about them. They said they'd charge $20/tire to swap...
