Default IS 250 Manual Trans. gurgling noise

When stopped at a light or at idle, I hear this gurgling noise from the engine or transmission (clutch not depressed). When I depress the clutch, the noise goes away. Is this normal for manual transmissions? I did some research online and it seems like there are quite a few people with IS 250 6MTs with the same problem. Is this ordinary?? My car has 1700 miles on it.

I think i saw this somewhere else but were you on an incline/decline? If so, its the fuel moving around the tank. i could be wrong but i cant really recall.

sahara78-

In addition to my other clutch issue, I also had a "whirring" noise when I didn't have the clutch pedal depressed, and which went away when the pedal was depressed.

MIS IS250,

I think the noise I'm referring to can be compared to a jar of marbles.. I read in a different forum that this sound is normal with IS 250MTs. MIA IS250, can you please update me on what the dealership has to say on this issue when you pay them a visit? Thanks!

The Cliffs Notes on my situation: I complained to the dealership at 182 miles, was told that it was "normal," called corporate to complain, got the runaround for two months, finally got my entire clutch assembly replaced, and after all that, still had the noise.

I hope your situation works out better.

To clarify, my "jar of marbles" sound occurred when I accelerated from a stop, or, to a lesser degree, from a roll in second. The noise was minimal or absent when the car was cold, and got progressively louder the longer the car was driven (it maximized at about one hour). It was also MUCH worse when starting on a hill.

Same sound here @ Idle, goes away when clutch is fully depressed. I also get "Jar of marbles" as well when I slowly accelerate in 1st and 2nd (most noticible when I'm hold @ the friction point). Best way I can describe the sound is taking 2 hollow metal pipes n grinding them together.

IMO, the 2IS MT gear box/shifter just makes a tonne of noise. Do you guys notice the stick vibrates quite a bit too? Also, there's a loud "thunk" sound when you're shifting in the lower gears? I drove my friends civic MT 06 and everything is so smooth, quiet, with 0 vibrations (could be he swapped a heavier ****). Honda > Toyota in terms of MT?

I'm taking it for 1600km inspection on Monday so i'll see what the mechanics have to say.

Rividsoul,

Can you keep us posted on what the mechanic says about the noise on the transmission after you bring it in for service? I hope it's normal. Thanks!

The heading reminded me of the scene in the restaurant in the movie Dumb and Dumber.

Harry: I can't believe it.
Lloyd: Life is a fragile thing, Har. One minute you're chewin' on a burger, the next minute you're dead meat.
Harry: But he blamed me. You heard him. Those were his last words.
Lloyd: Not if you count the gurgling sound.

Honestly, at this point I'm pretty sure it's "normal," and a consequence of the (bad) design.

When I attempted to get this issue addressed, I went through corporate, so my point of contact became the Regional Service Manager for the SF Bay Area. He test drove my car and definitely heard the "jar of marbles" sound, and I also provided him with a full month's worth of logs (every trip made, including start/end times, mileage, and notes on the sound) in a spreadsheet. He said that he would also provide that information to one of the engineers at corporate.

The final determination was that the noise was normal, but the RSM offered to do a one-time "goodwill" replacement of the entire clutch assembly, cautioning that it probably would not make any difference.

He was correct: the sound went away for about 300 miles, and then the noise came right back.

So, I hope y'all get some sort of resolution, but it seems like there's nothing that can really be done.

Read all about your noise here. It's not going away, they all do it to some extent, and some are far worse than others.
