Cooney - How long ago did you inquire about your rates?

i am going to contact them again to understand why they are quoting me such high rates. I am going from a Maxima to this car. Currently my Maxima is like 500/6months

FWIW also, $806 per 6 months with MetLife for $300K/$100K in the Seattle, WA area. Not married. Age 27 male. Previously, it was $461 per 6 months for my '99 Galant ES V6 (same coverage). I do have an Umbrella policy through MetLife for an extra $200/year (or $100 per 6 months) which basically brings my total vehicle-related incidents to $1.3M/$1.1M.

Thats because Type R's are rare and get stolen like nothing. Even GSR's have high insurance rates because of theft.

I got the car (and the insurance) on Nov. 9 & confirmed my premium amount (pre SSA credits) on the usaa.com site tonight. .Though I live in L.A., the IS will be low mileage, with no commute, and I've got a good driving record. .And I've had a lot of insurance with USAA for many years. .I have no idea how they set the rate when someone calls; one of life's many mysteries.

Cooney - thanks!

I am 38 and I also have a good driving record (1 accident 7 years ago... and no other tickets). I have been with USAA for my auto insurance for 20 years and have them for my home insurance.

I will call again to understand what toggles this. I just don't understand why this car will increase my insurance $800/year.

Brain's not functioning too well, but I coulda sworn I just asked for a quote from Liberty cuz they're supposed to be the best (from a consumer standpoint). Unfortunately, they're also the most expensive. If the OP wants, I can give him the name of a good agent in the SoCal area who's real good at finding you discounts. I didn't go with Liberty in the end, but I was so impressed with my experience, I'd still recommend the guy cuz he tried so hard to help me out. Just PM me.

USAA is nice. I'd go with them if I were eligible. You lucky bastards who are eligible don't know how good you have it.

Default You guys need to post what type of coverage you are getting

In western NJ (Hunterdon county, relatively cheap by NJ standards), the IS350 was going to be the most expensive car - by far, for me to insure).

Completely clean driving record - 12000 miles/year
300/300 coverage
100k property damage
Primary Health insurance is first insurance, then auto insurance comes in
Geico
27 year old married male
limited tort option (no one is NJ can afford no-tort, i.e. sue the crap out of people for even minor injuries, inconvenience)

2006 Legacy GT - 996 year
2006 G35 - 1237 year
2006 330i - 1130 year
2006 IS350 1350 year

Rates aren't technically that bad, but the IS had an MSRP 3k lower than the 330i (I actually had VIN numbers for the 330i and IS350 to base the quote off of). Still 20% higher for IS than 330i.
Reason for the high IS costs, the old IS300 was extremely high to insure due to the "boy racer" crew of owners with high rates of speeding tickets, street racing tickets, and high damage accidents (i.e. high speed). Combined with the supposedly high costs of replacement parts, this made the IS300 one of the most expensive cars in America to insure.

If Lexus does manage to expand the demographics of the average IS owner, you should start seeing your insurance rates go down, but not for a couple of years.

Codex, if you've got a favored local agent please post or PM. I'm not against shopping it around some more but I have low expectations because of my favored status with Liberty Mutual

Another funny price was on 03+ Mustang Cobras (I was shopping these before I stepped up to the vette). The Cobra would cost me 50% more to insure than the Z06! Now in that case it had to be people wrecking and/or stealing them (slightly slower $35K 4-seat car versus $50K 2-seat car).

Holy crap! They want $1739 a year to insure an IS350 versus about $1600 on my current Z06. Here's the kicker, they want $1351 to insure a 330i (both assumed $44K total MSRP, not having an actual VIN to rate against, same coverage as my current policy).

What are you guys doing to your IS's to make rates so high? Are they getting stolen, wrecked, or what? Being more expensive to insure than a 330i is understandable, more than a Z06 is just nuts!
Historically the IS300 has been one of the most expensive vehicles to insure. 4 door sport car category. Alot of it has to do with the risk rate of the vehicle as far as claims are concerned, and parts on the IS are expensive. Im in the automobile claims industry by profession.

Just called USAA again - still same 900/6 months in Phoenix.

I also had the lady check on a couple different locations. For South Carolina it would be in 550-600/ 6 months range.

Phoenix stinks for auto insurance

That's crazy that it's that much higher. A couple years ago, my premium with USAA shot up and that was due to SC having a large number of un-insured motorists on the road.

I'm 22 (near LA, never had a point on it, licensed since 16) and I'm only paying 900 for the Solara (6 months) and the IS 350 (used price of 42k pre-tax) was quoted as 1050/6 months for me... I'm sort of pissed my damn camry costs so much x_x

shop around! There may be a better insurance company out there for you. I'm w/ 21st Century. I get a small discount from AAA and their rate for me is higher than i21 =\

Good luck =\ Shopping around always benefits ppl. My friend (clean record, 24, licensed since 16) was quoted 3600/year for his 06 GS300... but shopped around and ended up insuring all 3 of his cars for about 3600/year lol (I think he insurer is "Safeway" or something like that...)
