Default How do you remove the TPMS?

This is my first car with tpms so I'm not that familar with it. Is this something simple I can do at home or do I need to bring it to a shop to remove it? I need to bring the tpms to get them transfer to a new set of wheels/tires and don't want to transport the old set of wheels/tires since they won't all fit in my car. Also, should I go to the shop or dealer to get them put in and what kinda cost am I looking at? Any help would be greatly appreciate.

I don't know how the TPMS in the IS works. In my old car (VW Touareg), they put wireless sensors in the valve stems that transmitted the PSI back to a module. These little sensors could be fitted into any new wheels I put on the car. Any knowlegable shop these days should know how to deal with TPMS sensors. I know places like Discount Tire and Firestone know what to do - they have both changed tires for me that had the sensors and I never had any problems.

Any competent tire shop can do it for you. Just have them remove the tires from the rim carefully. The TPMS is on the valvestem. It looks like this

Make sure the other set of wheels can accommodate this type of TPMS. Not all wheels can.

I'm not sure that anybody really answered your question about removing the TPMS yourself WITHOUT having to take the old wheels to the tire shop. Did you ever get them off? I'm assuming that if you deflate the tire enough to break the bead seal then you can just remove them by hand? Anybody ever done this?

I would have the tire shop remove them. They will reseal them after taking them apart! Not something I would do in my garage. You do not have to go to the dealer to have this done. Your local tire shop can do it. If you have Discount Tire they will do this and reseal the TPMS for you! This way there is no chance for possible air leaks!

I'm not sure that my post was clear. He was trying to avoid hauling his old tires to the shop because they don't fit in the car. Here is what I was trying to explain: Deflate the OLD tires to break the seal and remove the TPMS. Then take TPMS to wheel shop to have them professionally install in the new wheels.

The TPMS has to be unscrewed from the inside of the wheel lip. It is strongly recommended that you replace the o-ring every time you re-install the TPMS. The kit is only $20 for all 4 wheels on Tire rack.com or Discount Tire.

I wouldnt remove them period! Just take them to the tire shop. The TPMS is very close to the tire bead and if you hit it you can forget about that sensor! Better to pay the few dollars to have them do the full process. It cant cost that much. Another alternative is get a 2nd set. Our car allows for 2 sets of TPMS. I have this for both sets of rims! I found a NEW set of TPMS on ebay for 100$ shipped to my door

If you would rather use the exisiting ones I suggest to let the tire place take care of for you!

Good luck!

I think I found my answer. Just as I suspected. Search is a wonderful thing.

They don't have to unmount the tires to remove the tpms. They just de-flated it and popped it out from the side. Same goes when putting in the tpms.

Can you put on wheels/tires w/TPMS into a car w/o TPMS?

For example, 2008 IS350 wheels w/TPMS into a 2003 GS300 Sportdesign.

Please let me know. Thank you.

Eric

As stated before most shops can do that, I went to America's Tire for some tires and I saw the whole process, I think they do a rebuild? Well yeah shouldn't be hard.

you guys realize you can't just deflate the tire and expect to pop the bead of the tire off the wheel by hand ,right? especially on a low profile tire. you need a tire machine to do this without damaging something. once the bead is broken, then you can hold the bead down next to the sensor with a bar and use an 11mm socket to remove the retaining nut off the sensor. pay attention to where the gaskets are the order they fit.
you'll need a new gasket kit for each sensor you remove.

Yes, but of course your car can't "read" the sensors. If it were me, I'd change the TPMS valves to regular ones. This can be done with the tires still mounted, but the wheel/tire combo would need to be rebalanced.
