My friends thinks i should downsize rims size from 18 to 17!
I got an is250 lowered on eibach with standard 18 x 8 in the front and 18 x 8.5 in the rear. My friend has an s2000 with 17 x 8 in the front and 17 x 9 in the rear. He swears i should get smaller rims but same width for better handling and it will create a lower center of gravity between my car and the road. Is there any validity to this?? I guess it could make sense if the rims were wide enough to cover the road, but i'm not sure.
what do u guys think?

Dood, I think thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard of to worry about (no offense I know how friends can make you worry about things that you shouldnt bother worrying about). Sure it will create a lower center of gravity because the car will be lower, but so will the drop you put on it. Just leave it, 17s are too small for this car anyway. Most of us are trying to get bigger rims on it!

Get new friends with some taste. Take some pictures after you install them so we can have a good laugh around here.
But if you think it would look fine or you would like 17's go for it.

To each its own, but I dont recommend it, my rule I go by is, the wheel should look proportional to the rest of the car. I think 17" will look to small to the rest of the car. But if thats the look you want, go for it.

2 cents worth on going from 18 to 17
I replaced the 18's on my 05 SC 430 as I wanted to run 50 verus 40 series tire. I just dont like skinny tires and worried about dented rims. I havent noticed any handling losses probably as I never drive at the limit. I used rims from the GS 300 with 9 spokes. I was worried that it would look small but it doesnt and the car actually looks much better to me.

From an appearance point of view, wheels look smaller and smaller each year. Ten years ago, 17" wheels were HUGE. From a performance standpoint, you have to consider the tire sizes that are available. I recently researched getting a small / lite wheel for my rears for drag racing, but couldn't find a tire that would have a small enough outer diameter (for better gearing). It turned out that the smallest diameter tire I could find in a decent width was an 18" tire! It's true that the 18" wheel is a bit heavy, but I believe the gearing advantage made up for it.
Regarding your buddy's comment, the same could be said about him running 16" wheels. When I was tracking my S2000, I absolutely LOVED the Kumho Victoracers in a 225/45-16 front and 245/40-16 rear.

I woudl assume, with 17s, you are getting thinner than OEM tires?
1) Your car would look pretty terrible with 17s and smaller than OEM tires(225/45/17).
2) Your car will not perform like an S2k... so your efforts will be in vain
3) You can go with lightweight 17x8s and lighter tires(IE Michelin pilots), that will incread your acceleration.

There's no way you can beat an S2000, on fair conditions.
If you wanted better handling and performance, you should have bought a BMW, or at least an IS 350.
So IMO, go for looks, not performance.
