Default What happens when you put the car in reverse while moving?

This maybe a stupid question, but just as the title states, what happens if you put the car into reverse while driving on a highway or a freeway. It seems stupid but my friend was joking around today and he goes " what if i put it into reverse?" so i thought about it, and to my surprise, i didn't know the answer. Is there a safety feature that wont let it go into reverse after a certain speed?

what about park?

After a certain speed it will lock out reverse. So even if you wanted to try this odd stunt, it won't let you.

I don't know about our IS, but when I first got my nissan maxima (year 1995), I accidently put into reverse while driving (very stupid), but the car still running in D mode. But don't try that on our 35k+ IS.

My very first car was a 1990 Pontiac Grand Am. I was going about 40mph, I was messing around with the shift **** when I accidently went into reverse and the car simply stalled. No loud bangs, grinds or anything of the sort, engine just died.

Yep! In my sweet yellow turbo IS300, I went on to an S curved entrance ramp in the winter when the roads where slick (smart me), and when I hit a part of the S, the wheels came out and I spun around and did over a 180 and slid off the side of the road facing traffic. Car just died. I think the same thing happens when you try to put it in reverse. Just dies.

Thank goodness. I thought I broke something - but nope, just cranked it up and drove away.

Try to force it. If it locks you out, use a hammer. Let us know the results.

I know that one some older cars like 1999-2001 or so they will make a loud click click click like some type of break away safety feature than when you are slow enough it will lock the tires up and stall. I used to do it when I got a little to eager to stop while valet parking cars. Not on purpose but you just get going to fast.

Uh yeah, definitely do not have your car valet parked if at all possible. You will have little punks like me beating the **** out of it. When things would get busy we would rag the **** out of them cause the quicker you went the more you get paid Most people would Valet rental cars and crap like that. But do not leave anything of value in it either. I personally would never steal from someone but I know a few guys that have, of course they don't admit to it even to a co-worker, but owners are not stupid. Maybe they just hit a toll a few minutes back and broke a $10 bill. Toll was $1 and now they only have $6 in the cupholder? Come on man, who are you fooling.

Don't get me wrong there were cars I did respect i.e. Vettes, Caddy's, etc. But a pontiac sunfire . . . . toasted.

Oh and page 2 bishes
