Default Navigation questions

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and I've been lurking for a few days. The IS350 is on my short list of cars to buy along with the TL Type-S and G35 Sport. I went to a dealership today but I couldn't test drive an IS350 because the the salesman said the only one they had for test driving was being driven by the service manager and he was gone for the day. That was a little disappointing.

I had some questions about the navigation system, but he didn't seem to really know what he was talking about so I figured I'd come to the experts here and pick your brains.

- Can you enter navigation addresses with voice commands? Like can you say out street names or spell the names of streets or cities letter by letter? If you can, can you change destinations by voice while moving? I've read that you can't change destinations through touch screen without having the navi mod, but I haven't read anything about voice commands for entering in destinations.

- Similarly, can you issue voice commands for the stereo or climate controls while moving without the navi hack? I guess changing that stuff through the buttons on the steering wheel and center console is good enough for me, but I'm just curious.

I'm going back next week to actually test drive the IS350 and find out for myself hands on, but any help with my questions would be much appreciated.

You can't enter street addresses through voice commands... but if you have it already preseted on your car, in the middle of a route you can change routes from one to another for example if your already on your home route... you could press the command button and say destination 1 or destination 2... you could use the voice commands that way.

I know you could turn off your audio using the voice commands... i accidentally turned it off once by saying home for some reason... i guess a glitch in the system that day.... but hey... now i know i could do that

anything else... Mr. tech savvy?

Thanks for the quick responses guys. It really helps. I'm going through that tutorial right now! BTW, the Lexus Canada site sucks in comparison to the American one. LOL.

On my 07 GX470 with the 5th generation navigation system, I can enter an address by voice command while in motion. I think yours should be the same way.

I went through that tutorial and you can enter addresses and points of interest through voice commands while driving without having to use the navi hack. This is great news. I was hoping that could be done. First thing I know I'll be doing though is turning off that voice prompt guidance. That must get so annoying! It didn't go into dialing through the handsfree bluetooth though. I'll have to try that when I go for the test drive next week. Somehow I think I'm going to be buying right after the test drive

Mountain View. It's a city in the Bay Area. I've been there many, many times in the last two years.

I’m glad Batmobile now agrees that you can enter destinations while moving through voice commands. This often ignored fact irritates the nav-hack proponents as it virtually eliminates the need to do the hack in the first place.

The system just will not recognize "mountain view". moun-Ton, mount-tuhn, etc, etc. No dice.

It also takes five minutes. I tried it today (again) to see if it would recognise my voice. It did a little better but I still think the reply voice is creepy. It's not the usual non-descript Lexus voice. More like an evil twin, ready to pounce on you as soon as you say something wrong.

At any rate, it works, but it takes a LOT more time and more of my attention on the screen than just entering an address using the override.

If you nav-hack guys would somehow devise a way where the voice is your wife’s or mother’s, I bet the process would go much faster: “What street is that? Come on, slow poke, spit it out! And keep your eyes on the road.”
