Always Go to 4th Gear in Manual Mode?
#16
Speaking of gears, I have found that 2nd gear is by far the most fun/best acceleration gear, ie ...I get the best "pin your head back into the head rest" effect in 2nd{flooring it at around 3700-4000rpms up to near redline}. In manual mode, if I'm in 3rd at around 3000+ rpms and floor it, the transmission will automatically drop to 2nd for better acceleration. I have tried 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears at 4000rpm and floor it, but they don't have the Bite that 2nd gear gives you. I'm sure it has to do with the specific gearing ratios. Does anyone else get that response?
My other past sports cars{all Manuals} also seemed to have a sweet spot, usually 3rd gear.

yep, save yourself from that embarassing phone call...lexus who won't know what you describing. this is not a prelude they will say.
but anyway, let me understand this. you are in 4th gear going 60mph and you want to go to 80mph so you press hard on the gas. are you saying you DON'T want it to downshift to 3rd (if it can) to get you to that 80mph, you would prefer to gradually make your way there? i think you can do this with the lexus if you don't press down so hard on the accelerator.

Correct, sometimes you just want to speed up in the gear you are in.. In the 5sp Prelude I have I usually don't downshift everytime I want to speed up. I can accelerate just fine in 5th gear doing 70mph if I want to do say 80mph. I don't downshift. It saves gas and I still get the acceleration I needed.
I assumed the paddle shifters were just that, SHIFTERS. I have been trying to figure out how I can control the changing of gears, however as you guys have put it, that is not an option. I was hoping that was the type of transmission it had, makes it more fun (complete control and all). Unfortunately I was wrong .

No, the computer will not allow you to downshift outside of these ranges because it is protecting itself from downshift that could put the revs too high and damage the engine. You shouldn't really need to downshift at anything more than these limits if you care about the car.
