Engine cranking/startup noise (merged threads)
ok guess im stuck badly i recently bought this car and now i see this, My car does not have this noise . but it falls under the vin number of the cars that could be effected, i can get the sound and take t to dealer and they will do the work, but idk if it worth opening the engine up im just worry it starts making it, since i just got this car idk if it made it before pr not, i want to know what to do before i go out of warranty, please help
And to your other question yes, have your spark plugs changed at the same time as this TSIB is performed. I did the exact same thing, bought my plugs off Sewell for $13 each and provided them to the dealer, and they ended up just charging me a half hour's labor at $57 instead of 4-5 hours' labor at $500-600.

Where is the TSIB VIN list?
I saw one attachment but it says IS350 only...
anyway if it is not making the noise then I think you should leave it alone, there is no good reason to start disassembly if there is no problem with it.

Good point well i end up canceling my appointment since i got extended warranty for 30,000 more mile, ill see if it make that noise later on
This is the 3rd time my vehicle will need this work done. I had the "5th" revision parts installed 1 1/2 ago under my extended warranty. I have to take it in again and will be out of pocket. Lexus corporate will not pay for it. The vehicle was not fixed correctly two times, because obviously there is a design flaw. Is there case/reason for a lawsuit?
Is there a new LSB out for is250's ? The one that is labeled "EG017-07" seems to cover all vins up to:
MODEL PLANT DRIVETRAIN PRODUCTION CHANGE EFFECTIVE VIN
2WD JTHBK262*72041664
4WD JTHCK262*72014588
2WD JTHBK262*75027761
4WD JTHCK262*75011435
Unfortunately my car still has this issue and the vin number is JTHCK262*72011499
Did he read the vin wrong?

Anyone know what the out of pocket expense would be to have this fixed? I had the issue initially maybe 1.5 years ago and had it corrected under the TSIB when I was less than 70K. However, the noise is back again and my car is at 71,700 miles.
there is a tsb for the noise that your discribing. the dealer will replace the cam gears if its still under waranty. also change your oil more often. with fresh oil in it, it wont make the noise as much. 5,000mi is too much you shoud change your oil every 3500mi
5k is too often, based on actual lab analysis of every used oil sample I've ever seen on a 2IS.
Cars haven't needed ~3k mile oil changes in decades... even most manufacturers are going to 7500-10,000 mile recommended change intervals (including Lexus as of the 2011 IS250 which has a 10k mile OCI)
If your response was directed towards my previous post, you must've missed what I said. The dealer already replaced the cam gears in my car around 1.5 years ago, per the TSIB, when my car was still under warranty. However, the crank noise has returned and my car is out of warranty. I'm looking for an estimate of what it will cost to have the cam gears replaced again, if that is the only solution to the problem. Additionally, I'm fairly certain changing the oil every 3500 miles is not necessary. Can anyone else chime in on this?
No, you really shouldn't.

Dropped my car off at the stealership this morning to have this TSB performed as the powertrain warranty lapses in a few months. Made an awful sound this morning when I cranked it. I get a call about half an hour ago from the Lexus Service Adviser claiming that they couldn't replicate the "grinding noise" when they started the engine a few times today and will attempt again tomorrow morning. In hind sight, I probably should have recorded this morning's start up.
