What's the worse that could happen of you don't take care of it right away? I've heard people mask the problem by adding more oil??

my girlfriend has a 2006 is250 and its making the same clacking noise too...is it covered under the basic 4 year 48,000 mile warranty? or is it covered under the 70,000 powertrain warranty? her car was delivered in april 2007...should still be covered under warranty right?

Got my '07 back from having this fixed along with the recalled valve springs last week. The service manager knew exactly what I was talking about when I dropped it off, which was encouraging. There have been no issues since I got it back, however I had the oil changed as well, and changing the oil seems to prevent the issue for a couple of months, as does the warmer weather. We'll see how it goes next winter I guess.

Incidentally, my service rep informed me that the powertrain warranty had been retroactively extended to 100,000 miles (no word on years). Of course this was just verbal. I haven't seen anything in writing, and I'm only at ~40k anyway, but those people between 70k and 100k experiencing this issue may still have time to get it corrected.

I started hearing the Startup Rattle about 1k Miles ago(69K on the clock), it would happen about 2-3 times out of 20 startups and even more often when it was colder out. The car had just hit 70,500 miles and was out of Warranty when it started making the noise every 1 out of 3 startups. I took it into Hoy-Fox Lexus this Morning and they kept the car, they'll be performing the Rattle TSB at no cost to me!!! They just said that it would be covered under my 70K Powertrain Warranty, even though it was already expired.

just curious, i have this rattle also obviously. My lexus had a 3 inch by 3 inch square drilled out on airbox for "noise" from the previous owner... they couldnt pin this TSIB on hacking the airbox and void my warranty? Or could they?

No they can't void your warranty because of an airbox hack. Here is a clip of my 06 that I picked up two weeks ago making this lovely noise. Going to get it fixed asap. I am not sure why the video wont embed but the link should let you watch it.

I'm trying to collect some data here..

Does anyone park up on a slope (like a driveway) AND have this noise?

i park flat and mine does it, but i can reproduce it best by driving my car and letting it warm up, then letting it sit for two or three hours, then usually if i start it again it will do it pretty bad.

07 IS250, 45k miles

I just noticed this issue last week... glad I am not alone! I'm going to call my dealership on Monday and give them a description of what I'm experiencing and some of the information from this thread to see if they have seen this before.

I just remembered that I have lots of powertrain warrenty left too. Yippie!

Stoped by the dealer today, the conversation with my mechanic went something like this:

Me: "I've been having this knocking type noise occur when I start up my..."
Him: "Cold start, usually in the morning? Doesn't occur for the rest of the day?"
Me: "VVT-i. You know exactly what I'm talking about."
Him: "Yup. Bring 'er in."

They are going to have the car for 2-3 days to be on the safe side. Won't be going in for another week or so.

my 06 with 45k mile started to make that noise about a month ago....
asked the service rep today and they say they have to recreate the noise to do the tsib...

Now i'm kinda afraid if they could not recreate it since its so warm outside now =\
