Would you buy your IS if it has only 228 hp ?
Hello all,
This is my first post in this forum. I am from the Middle East and last week we finally got the IS in our show rooms for the first time. However, we got screwed because we didn't get the IS250 and IS350 but instead we got IS 300 . While I was waiting impatiently to get the IS350 I can't really decide whether it's worth it or not to get the IS300 with the 3GR-FE engine and only 228 hp. It is true that I will not be drag-racing the car every day but 228-hp seems low these days especially that Lexus produces the same car with 306 hp in the US.
So, I am thinking whether it's worth to get the IS300 and enjoy the car with so-so power or should I skip it and look for another car ?

Here's the engine specs for the IS300:
Type : 3.0-litre V6 Four Cam 24-valve (3GR-FE, unleaded)
Piston displacement : 2995cc
Max. output : 228HP/6200rpm
Max. torque : 30.6kg-m/4400rpm (approx. 222 lb.ft)

lol.. and it's all the 350 owners hehehe.
I dunno. Isn't the 2.5 litre the newer engine and the 3.0 litre the older engine? I'd probably prefer an IS250 over an IS300 even if it gives up 24 ponies. But then again, the 3.0 litre does make 245hp on the GS300 so maybe there's a way to bump it up.

If you ride it and it feels that it lacks the "umphh" speed that you desire, then the car will not make you happy.
However, if you ride it and it feels fast "enough" for you, then the car will satisfy the need.
Don't buy the car because of Horsepower. Buy the car because it works as a whole entity.

I am very disapointed too that Lexus didn't get us the IS350 to the ME. Sure I'm glad it was the 300 and not the 250 but still. 2 of my friends wanted to buy an IS350 and a third one (my self)... but for now, it seem that all 3 of us won't be getting one because an IS300 (0-60 in 7.7) just isn't as exciting as the 306hp IS350 (0-60 in the low 5 seconds range).
I know there's more to the IS than acceleration, but for my friends and I 0-60 in 5.1 was one of the major highlights. That's faster than 95% of the cars on the road. I'm sure Lexus will sell lots of IS300 over here (just like any Lexus) because it's a great car, looks amazing, has nice features, great sound system and is very safe. Not everybody cares about blistering acceleration; some people are satisfied with adequate acceleration and that’s why it will sell well, those people represent the larger portion of the buying market.
I guess some of us are angry because we've been waiting for the IS350 for almost a year and when it FINALLY gets here, it's not what we've been longing for.
By the way, I have excellent driving manners, 90% of the time I drive like my dad; very calm drive, smooth braking, no hard turns or unnecessary switching lanes, but 10% of the time I feel like having a little fun and I do that through acceleration*.
* I do that on a cleared road and stop accelerating when I reach 120 km/hr (I almost never exceed 120)

I want to add:
It's like when you're a kid and you’ve had a pet for a while (example; turtle). You really like it, you stare at it, take care of it and know its personal traits/character to a point when you can distinguish it from other similar turtles (while other people wont be able to tell the apart). Then one day, when you come back from school the turtle died and your parents replaced it with the same kind of turtle, same size, looks very similar BUT, but, this new turtle just doesn’t act like the old one, so you lose interest. It doesn’t have the same meaning as the old one.
Note: You might learn to like the new turtle later on but for now, I'm not as excited.
That’s how I feel about the IS300’s engine.
The IS350 = the old turtle I had
The IS300 = the turtle that replaced my favorite turtle (yes it’s a turtle but it’s not the same turtle)
