Default DVD Hack

I found the thread on here about changing the wiring on the ML system to allow DVD playback while driving. I asked the sales rep who I bought my IS350 from if doing that would void the warranty and he said he didn't think so. You aren't adding any parts or anything. Is he right? Or will it void the warranty?

My opinion only...
Yes, void warranty for sure on that whole chunk (DVD changer, Navi, LCD screen, A/C and all other control buttons...) worth $8k+.

Yes, there is no additional part needed for the DVD/Navi mod. Part(s)? I think you mean the box that allows you to control I-Pod with existing audio buttons.. That is another cool toy to have also!

I spoke to a reputable auto audio/video shop and they told me a mod harness will soon to be released. Estimated at $250 including part and labor.

It is really up to you to wait or not, but when the dealer see that harness, they will still say “no warranty” unless you remove it prior going to dealer when you are experiencing problem with that “chunk”.

I am sure there are many people in Norcal did the mod, and will help you without any charge.

of course it will void the warranty. you are altering the stock system and asking it to perform in a way that's not recommended by the factory. so if the nav or the head unit blow up, they can blame it on your change.

but if you do that mod and then the engine blow, i think they will have to fix it for you

Definately voids the warranty.

Is there any penalty for doing it on a leased car?

My guess is that you could potentially be billed for replacing the entire system or at the very least repairing it back to stock.

In many states, it is a citation offence to drive with the DVD display visable to the driver.

But I'm sure the fine isn't too much ...

yup i would think so. if they find out about it after your lease return, they can probably bill you.

'

And it would depend on what you're watching... (especially on a visor mounted screen), I've read about arrests for child endangerment / indecent exposure, etc for **** but I can see an easy transition to

Uncensored Videos
NR-17 and R rated movies

all it would take is a cop to see a child in another car (taller SUV) being able to look into your car and view the screen and the charge is warranted.

Fortunately the equipment in the 2IS is exempted by statute in most states because of it's Nav capability and/or rearview camera capability. Watching a moving is one thing but having the display in position is another. Is it a violation to have the DVD movie playing when you're at a stop light and the driver is watching the screen? I don't think so but if you hack the nav, you may now be in violation of some laws....but not really because the equipment is exempted.

These laws and their many aspects were covered in detailed in a previous thread, so I'm not trying to rehash but has anyone ever know anyone to get a ticket for this? I think most officers assume the stock equipment is good, it's only when a bunch of aftermarket equipment is encountered.

P.S. Maybe this deserves another thread for discussion since a bunch of us have DVDs playing....
