I just bough a 2.3gallon manual oil pump to extract the oil in the boat's engine. I'm thinking to do the same for the Lexus. Is our engine's dipstick tube give access straight down to the oil pan like any other engine?

Anyone here already using this method? Did it removes as much oil as with the drain bolt? It would be allot easier than jacking up the car.

The problem with pumping it out is that it definitely wouldn't extract as much oil from the pan, but it also wouldn't get the oil that is in the filter. It would also be silly to change your oil without changing the filter. Filters should be changed AT LEAST as often as oil.

In that case, you haven't saved any effort. Changing the filter requires all the same steps that you take to drain the oil from the oil pan, and is just as messy. What I've done is install a fumoto drain valve on the oil pan, which makes draining the oil very easy and clean.

Phatboyc, it just occurred to me that you bought the pump for changing your boat's oil. Sorry for going off topic, but I don't understand why you would want to use a pump for that either. All 3 of the boats I've had (or have) have a hose going from the engine's oil pan with a screw cap that will simply feed right rough the drain hole in the hull. I wish cars were as easy ...

Mercruisers has that drain hose but not Volvo's unfortunately.

So there is no way I can remove the filter without placing the car on ramps? Bummer.

I can't say for sure that the filter can't be reached from above, but I can promise it would be a big mess if you did since oil does spill out of the housing when you remove it.

That's weird that Volvo didn't think to include a drain hose. My first was a 3.0 Mercruiser (Chevy), 2nd is a 5.0 PCM (Ford), and my 3rd is a 5.7 Indmar (Chevy).

Just changed my oil and filter. ecr527 got that right about needing a breaker bar to get the filter housing cap off. My plastic end drive wrench just slipped and then broke. Had to make up a wrench out of steel.

Thanks for this write up! I just changed my oil for the first time and this made it so much easier. Luckily I didn't need a wrench for my oil filter; it just came off by hand. The only thing I'll note is that the pictures are really close up, so everything was a lot smaller than I thought.

My friend gave me some filters and they're paper filters. I was wondering if the paper filters are the new types?

Here's the link from my.is, it has the torque specs for both the drain plug and filter.
