Bear with a soon-to-be owner who hasn't taken delivery of his car yet...

But I'm wondering, how exactly can one start the engine if the battery in the key fob dies? I know there's a key built into it that can be used to unlock the door, but if there's nowhere to insert a key in the cockpit, I'm assuming you can't start the car until you replace the battery.

Which is a good excuse to keep some spares in the glovebox....

 

My understanding is that even if the battery in the fob departs, your trusty car will continue to recognize the fob and start just fine.

 

The key fob can be held up close to the start button to start the car when the battery dies. I'm assuming this is via powerless RFID- which is the same technology used in most ID cards at workplaces that get you into doors, etc.

 

From other discussions,and other cars I have seen with this arrangment, you hold the fob within 4 inches of the button and the switch senses the chip in the key and the starter button will activate.

If you keep a spare key in the glovebox, there's a good chance your car will not be happy with you, since it thinks you are locking your key in your car... There's a chance that it can't detect it if it's in the glove compartment, though. Anyone care to test that out? I would but my garage is a bit of a walk from my apartment...

 

I wasn't talking about keeping spare keys in the glovebox, I meant spare batteries.

 

no I posted on this before but I don't remember exactly but you can definitely safely leave a spare key inside your car while you use your regular key to get in and out. start and lock unlock your car normally with the remote. can't remember if you can still push the door button to lock I think you can.
